LONDON – Ellie Scotney became the undisputed junior featherweight champion on Sunday after defeating Mayelli Flores on points in the fight of the year.
Scotney (12-0), holder of the WBO, IBF and WBC titles, defeated Flores by unanimous decision to win the Mexican WBA belt and become the youngest ever undisputed British champion, whether male or female, at the age of 28.
The judges scored it 96-94, 100-90 and 100-90.
“I can’t describe how close of a fight it was, I think the result [didn’t] give her justice,” Scotney said in the ring. “She was relentless from the first bell. And when I tell you that I had to go through so many tests to get into this room today, it was only God who got me through it. Only God.”
The opening rounds were at a breakneck pace, with Flores (13-1-1, 4 KO) marching forward from the opening bell, trying to prevent Scotney from gaining any rhythm and momentum, firing from all directions and troubling the London-born fighter. The pair went blow for blow for much of the contest, but in round four Scotney began to gain control, working more on her jab and moving to avoid Flores’ most powerful punches before building combinations.
Despite this, Flores didn’t care and continued to perform, insisting on engaging Scotney in a brawl, much to the delight of the fans in the arena who were engrossed in every second of the match.
Scotney remained composed and pulled back as the fight went on, landing cleaner shots while Flores had greater efficiency but failed to hurt Scotney. In Round 8, Scotney was in control, landing two huge right hands that rocked Flores. In the final two rounds, Scotney moved well, worked behind the jab and made sure she made no mistakes, completing an impressive victory.
Earlier, Chantelle Cameron won the vacant WBO junior middleweight title with an impressive unanimous decision victory over Michaela Kotaskova.
The judges scored 100-90, 99-91, 99-91 for Cameron (22-1, 8 KO), who dominated from the first bell, attacking the body of the taller Kotakova and choking her.
Cameron, 34, becomes a two-weight world champion after previously holding the undisputed junior welterweight titles. The Briton imposed her physicality, even though she was a smaller player, and although Kotaskova showed heart and kept throwing punches, they did not carry any power.
Fighting for longer, three-minute rounds, Cameron worked non-stop and her physical prowess proved invaluable, mixing up combinations that left her opponent with shaky legs on more than one occasion.
After the fight, Mikaela Mayer joined Cameron’s post-fight interview and the pair stated that they intended to fight each other next.
They met in the ring, and although a fight had not yet been agreed upon, both insisted it would be an uncomplicated one considering they both held Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions titles.
