Daniel Dubois will not wait for the rematch with Fabio Wardley

Daniel Dubois did not guarantee an immediate rematch with Fabio Wardley, saying he is focused on staying vigorous and defending his WBO heavyweight title rather than waiting for one opponent.

Wardley activated his rematch clause following his 11th-round loss to Dubois in April. After the fight, the Londoner rose from being knocked down early in the fight to maintain control and gradually break down the champion under constant pressure.

While a second fight has been widely discussed, Dubois suggested nothing has been finalized yet.

“Yes, well that’s what they’re talking about, but I’m not going to wait for anyone,” Dubois said when asked about Wardley in an interview on talkSPORT. “I’m going to take care of this belt, defend it.”

The 28-year-old added that he wants to continue to build on the success he has achieved after reaching the top of the heavyweight division.

“I can’t wait to start improving, getting out there and maximizing what we’ve done since I was a kid being taken to the gym with my dad. And now here we are,” Dubois said.

Dubois won the WBO title with a dramatic knockout victory over Wardley, who entered the fight with back-to-back wins over Justis Huni and Joseph Parker. Wardley had early success and scored a knockdown, but Dubois gradually took control as the fight progressed.

Dubois’ bulky shots left Wardley with severe marks around his eyes and a bloody nose before the referee stopped the fight in the 11th round. There was then a debate on whether the fight should have been stopped early.

Frank Warren has repeatedly indicated that a rematch is the likely next step, and Wardley has already confirmed that he intends to exercise his contractual right to a second fight.

Dubois’ latest comments do not rule out this outcome. However, they explain that he does not want to postpone his career until the negotiations are completed. The heavyweight champion wants activity and is focused on defending his belt rather than waiting for a fight schedule to be set.

Munguia Retains WBA Title Amidst Defensive Concerns in Decision Victory Over Zon

"Munguia Retains WBA Title Amidst Defensive Concerns in Decision Victory Over Zon"

Jaime Munguía (47-2, 35 KOs) kept his WBA super middleweight belt, but Nikita Zon made him look vulnerable in a unanimous decision victory that was much harder than the scores indicated. The Russian’s power repeatedly disrupted Munguía, most dramatically in a sixth round that nearly wrecked the champion’s night.

The judges scored it 117-111, 116-112 and 117-111. Munguía’s combinations and greater activity gave him a case for winning, although those margins did little justice to the danger Zon (12-1-1, 10 KOs) created during twelve competitive rounds.

Zon was making his first appearance over the championship distance against an opponent with far more experience. Yet he found openings in Munguía’s defense often enough to turn an expected showcase into an uncomfortable struggle. The champion could put punches together, but too frequently left himself available for hard replies.

Round six exposed the cost. Zon hurt Munguía badly and threatened a stoppage, forcing the Mexican to survive before he could regain the initiative. Munguía recovered and resumed his offensive work, showing determination without fixing the defensive faults that had put him in trouble.

The referee’s decisions also helped him. Two apparent knockdown sequences went without counts, while a clear rabbit punch from Munguía brought no point deduction. Those incidents deserved better handling in a fight where individual scoring decisions mattered more than the final totals suggested.

Munguía’s output ultimately carried him through, but this was a poor performance against a challenger who had never faced comparable opposition. Zon’s relative inexperience should have made the champion’s greater variety and seasoning decisive; instead, his power remained a threat.

After the Bruno Surace knockout loss, another damaging scare is difficult to dismiss. Munguía still takes too many clean punches while attacking, and Zon demonstrated how quickly that can erase the comfort provided by a busy round. The belt stayed with Munguía, but the performance gave stronger punchers at 168 pounds plenty to study.

Canelo vs Mbilli Preview

Canelo has been here many times before, but this latest assignment comes with a different kind of pressure.

The Mexican has dominated the super middleweight division for years, collecting world titles and facing some of the biggest names in boxing. However, his most recent defeat means another loss would leave serious questions about how much longer he can compete at the highest level.

Mbilli has everything to gain. The unbeaten contender has built his reputation on aggression, power and a willingness to trade punches. He now faces a former pound-for-pound king who has spent years dealing with opponents determined to take his place.

The supporting card also features former world champion Jaime Munguia against unbeaten Nikita Zon, while Rafael Espinoza defends his WBO featherweight championship against Ricardo Blandon.

David Picasso meets unbeaten Carl Jammes Martin for the WBC Silver featherweight title, with Reito Tsutsumi, Bek Nurmaganbet and several other unbeaten prospects also appearing on the card.

For Canelo, victory keeps his championship ambitions alive. For Mbilli, beating the Mexican superstar would be the biggest result of his career.
