Conor McGregor compares UFC 329 injury to 2013 setback, eyes quick return

McGregor expects to return to action in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship next year.

McGregor (22-7) shared an update on the injury he picked up in his
recent loss to Max
Holloway at
UFC 329. “Notorious” suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in his
right knee. The Irishman claims the injury is nearly identical to
the one he suffered on his left leg in his first fight against
Holloway in 2013, which he won via unanimous decision.

Considering McGregor had taken less than a year to recover from his
injury in 2013, he expects to return even sooner this time. The
Dubliner also revealed that he can walk without crutches and do leg
extension exercises.

“Update: It was ACL and meniscus,†McGregor wrote on X. “It is the
same injury as the first Holloway fight, only this time the
opposite leg. Quite shocking. I returned to competition within 9
months to fight Diego
Brandao back then. With today's regenerative medicine
advancements and improved training methods it is well within my
realm to return by next summer. I am walking without a crutch. I
done leg extension machine work the other day to no issue. So I can
walk without aid, and activate my quad under resistance.â€

The former two-division champion believes he was perhaps saved from
worse damage. Highlighting how he could've gone down a dark path
had me emerged victorious against Holloway, McGregor sees the
silver lining to his injury.

“All very positive,†he added. “I am maximum discipline and have
maintained it fully since the bout. I wonder was I saved from
something worse here. I believe so. I would have attended the after
party as “the man†and who knows then. I believe I was saved. Thank
you God! On we go, no sad stories. Thank you for the support and
well wishes everyone, your health is your wealth.â€

McGregor returned to action after five years in a welterweight
matchup against Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas. He injured his
knee with the first kick he threw, forcing the referee to call a
stoppage loss for the Irish superstar at just 69 seconds of the
opening round. While there's growing speculation that McGregor was
already injured going into the bout, he, his coach John
Kavanagh and UFC CEO Dana White have shot down these
claims.

Magomedsharipov is still as skilled as they come.

Magomedsharipov (18-1) returned to competition after seven years,
facing
Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight Youssef
Zalal in a grappling match at ACBJJ 22 at Ora Arena in
Istanbul, Turkey.

The Russian defeated Zalal via unanimous decision in a competitive
match. Zalal was clearly disappointed with the judges' verdict,
having finished strong against Magomedsharipov, who also had his
moments.

While Magomedsharipov was originally booked to grapple Raul Rosas
Jr. at ACBJJ 21 last month, he pulled out due to an injury.

Magomedsharipov remains one of the biggest what-ifs in mixed
martial arts history. He was a highly touted UFC featherweight,
known for his flashy striking and well-rounded game. However, he
never competed after a win over Calvin
Kattar in 2019. After a series of matchups falling through,
Magomedsharipov formally retired from MMA in 2022.

He addressed his retirement prior to his grappling match against
Zalal, claiming that he's content with his decision.

“I have no regrets about leaving the sport and not winning
anything,†Magomedsharipov told Red Corner MMA. “Of course, I
wanted to become UFC champion, but it fell through. They didn't let
me. They were stalling for time. They didn't let me fight.â€

Carlos Prates confident he knocks out Islam Makhachev after getting ‘smashed’ early

Carlos Prates likes his chances against UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, envisioning a clash similar to Anderson Silva's second championship victory over Chael Sonnen back in 2012.

Prates said in an interview with UFC veteran Gilbert Burns that he's currently in discussions with the promotion for a date to fight Makhachev, who defended his title against Ian Machado Garry earlier this month. Prates said “would be perfect†to headline UFC 335, which is scheduled for Dec. 12 in Las Vegas, but UFC officials told him said January in Australia is also a possibility.

Either way, the Brazilian knockout artist envisions himself having to dig deep to come out victorious against Makhachev like Silva did in the Sonnen rematch.

“You look at his fight with Chael Sonnen, Chael Sonnen got the mount in the first round. In the second, [Silva] went out there and knocked the guy out,†Prates said. “And that's what I think is going to happen. I think I'm going to start by getting smashed, and the first time I manage to get back to my feet and start hurting him, I'm going to knock him out somewhere around the fourth or fifth round.â€

Prates has only lost once in the UFC, dropping a decision to Garry in April 2025, and “became even more confident†for a future clash with Makhachev after seeing Garry's success in wrestling exchanges with the welterweight champion. Prates scored knockouts in every other fight he's had so far in the UFC, stopping former champions Jack Della Maddalena and Leon Edwards in his most recent appearances.

“If he was able to get Makhachev off his back, I can do it too,†Prates said. “I became even more confident. Based on the things I saw and the amount of time we have to train, I was like, ‘Fuck, I think we can do this.' I already thought so, and now I saw Ian Garry defend certain positions the same way I do, like the back against the cage. I do that a lot.

“I saw someone saying that [Makhachev] made an adjustment because [Garry] is very tall and it's difficult for Makhachev to get his hooks in. And that defense he used, I do that every fight. I did it several times against Ian, but he would sit down and try to take my back. I already do everything standing so there's no danger of losing the position. I was like, ‘Man, I think this guy is going to be in trouble.' When I get my hands on him… I'm very confident that I'm going to bring that belt home.â€
