Carl Froch predicts Fabio Wardley vs Anthony Joshua as Wardley says fight ‘would be an honour’

Having risen to become a full world champion, attention now turns to who Fabio Wardley (20-0-1 (19 KO)) will defend his WBO heavyweight title against in 2026.

The 30-year-old received confirmation last week after former undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk decided to vacate the belt. Interestingly, the Ukrainian champion can still become a three-time undisputed heavyweight champion if he decides to fight for his former title again.

It is unclear whether Usyk-Wardley will ever be created, but there will be no shortage of candidates for the Ipswich player’s first defense. Names ranging from Daniel Dubois to Derek Chisora have been bandied about in recent days, but one fighter who could face Wardley next year is Anthony Joshua (28-4 (25 KO). The 36-year-old returns next month in an eight-round crossover fight with Jake Paul, but regaining the world title and becoming a three-time champion remains “AJ’s” ultimate goal.

Carl Froch – who always has an opinion on Joshua – offered his views on a potential Wardley-Joshua fight during an episode Froch About the fightwhere the guest was the newly crowned champion.

“I said in a question last week that you would potentially knock out Anthony Joshua if you fought him. Not only because I think AJ is past his prime – because you’re throwing a monster punch. If you fought him now, I think you have a great chance of knocking him out because he’s fighting quite timidly right now. He’s a little insecure.

“Would you agree to that? If you could see now that you were going with AJ?”

Wardley on the crest of a wave following a stoppage victory over former champion Joseph Parkerreplied:

“I back myself to knock out anyone in the heavyweight division. I have the power to hurt anyone, whether it’s AJ or anyone else you want to pick and put in front of me. I have no doubt that if I catch them, if I get to them, they’ll feel it. They’ll know they’ve been hit. That’s something I would back down from.”

About a potential matchup, Wardley he told the BBC that it would be an “honor” to share a ring with the former champion.

“I’ll never say no to anyone. AJ is one of the reasons I got into boxing. He’s kind of changed the face of British boxing since he took up the sport and really brought it back to life in a way. It would be an honor to share the ring with him.”

The Brit was dropped twice by massive underdog Prenga in the opening round of their clash in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, but ‘AJ’ managed to recover and record a big knockdown of his own in the second round that resulted in the stoppage victory.

Joshua and Usyk now train together, having famously had two battles for the unified world heavyweight title in 2021 and 2022, and the Ukrainian has had his say on his stablemate’s victory over Prenga.

Tony Bellew Reviews Anthony Joshua's Comeback Victory Over Kristian Prenga After Knockdown Drama

Anthony Joshua may have earned a knockout win over Kristian Prenga but the fight certainly didn’t unfold as most people expected.

Joshua was facing the Albanian in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it looked like a massive upset could be on the cards when he was dropped twice in the opening round.

‘AJ’ was able to recover and went on to secure a second round knockout victory to prevent the shock lossseemingly paving the way for the battle against Tyson Fury later this year.

One man who was ringside to witness the battle was former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellewand he praised Joshua’s ability to turn things around in the fight after describing it as ‘chaos’.

“We predicted round two but I don’t think we foresaw that. That was chaos. He doesn’t see the uppercut coming and finds himself on the floor without knowing how he got there.

“The second one he did see it coming and he was able to clench down on the jaw. He got up and then the experience that he has he used tonight because he tied him up. Against Andy Ruiz he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t know how to do that, but tonight he did.

“He showed once again there is no quit. To be that hurt in the first round and get up, that’s the recoveries of power. People talk about your chin, but it’s not, it’s the level of fitness that gets you up from the floor.

“When Joshua gets a fighter hurt he’s the best finisher in the division. Whenever he hurts someone they’re gone. I haven’t seen him drop anybody and they survive, only Andy Ruiz. He’s a ruthless finisher.”

The clash between Joshua and Fury is now expected to be announced soon for later this year, after Fury won his own interim fight on Friday by defeating Mariusz Wach.
