Ben Davison has been Anthony Joshua’s head trainer for his last three fights, but he doesn’t like his upcoming fight with Jake Paul.
It was announced this week that Joshua and Paul will fight on December 19 in an eight-round heavyweight bout headlined by the Kaseya Center in Miami.
This came after Paul was forced to withdraw from an exhibition match with Gervonta Davis, whose out-of-ring problems ultimately ruled him out of the November 14 event.
As a result of filing a civil lawsuit against Davis, Paul will take on a completely different challenge by placing a weight limit on Joshua of 245 pounds live on Netflix.
Naturally, the boxing world has largely reacted with massive criticism, especially considering Paul’s most notable performance came last year against 58-year-old Mike Tyson.
Even beyond that event, there is no evidence to suggest the 28-year-old is at the level of former two-time world champion Joshua.
However, from Joshua’s perspective, it must be said that Paul represents a rather welcome return to the ring after his devastating defeat to Daniel Dubois in September 2024 by fifth-round stoppage.
As for his training team, there are rumors suggesting that AJ may take his operations elsewhere despite working with Davison from 2023, but nothing official has been announced.
Nevertheless, Davison has already offered his opinion on Paul’s fight next month in an interview with Boxing News, while also highlighting the emphatic nature of Joshua’s second-round victory over former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.
“It’s a bit like Floyd [Mayweather] when he boxed [Conor] McGregor. He said, “I’m going to rob a bank.” I think he came out wearing a ski mask.
If they’re going to pay him [Joshua] ridiculous money for this [fight Paul]then the interest will raise a little.
When it comes to fighting, Francis Ngannou is one of the most enduring men in the world and look what happened there [in March 2024]. To be sincere, I don’t think it’s good for boxing.
[Joshua] he could play with it if he wanted, or throw it away.
If Joshua wins next month as expected, could finally pave the way for the long-awaited fight with Tyson Fury in 2026.
