Ortiz is not cushioned
Jamaine doesn’t have an simple life. This is certainly a risky comeback fight for Keyshawn because he’s not fighting another hard-working stiff. Ortiz is a major test for him, and he has the advantage when it comes to physical tools. Jamaine is faster, more mobile and has a better punch combination than Davis, and he fights in his natural weight class.
There is no room for fighting
This has to be as dominant a performance as he showed in his last win over Denys Berinchyk last February. What may keep Keyshawn from looking like 24-karat gold is the fact that Jamaine is not the ponderous, still type of fighter that his promoters at Top Rank have regularly fed him since turning professional in 2021.
Jamaine Ortiz’s fighting style is a combination of Shakur Stevenson and Andy Cruz. This is the wrong fighter for Keyshawn to exploit to regain momentum as there is a good chance he will lose. Even if he wins, he looks bad for being talented; it won’t lend a hand him regain his lost momentum.
The year that has passed
Keyshawn spoke earlier today, saying that he is only 26 years ancient and still has a lot of time. He turns 27 in two months, so he’s already at an older age. A year of his career essentially evaporated as he failed to make weight for his June fight with Edwin De Los Santos.
The fight was subsequently cancelled. On the other hand, it may have been a good thing that Keyshawn was overweight because he could have lost. De los Santos is no joke. He is one of the most powerful punchers in the lightweight division.
We saw Nahir Albright stun Keyshawn during their 2023 fight. If he could hurt him, imagine what De Los Santos would do. So it wasn’t entirely bad that Davis missed the fight with him.
“A year ago, Keyshawn Davis looked like one of the brightest stars in boxing. He defeated Denys Berinchyk and reached 135 pounds,” said commentator Chris Mannix in his canal about Keyshawn Davis fighting Jamain Ortiz at Turki Alalshikh’s “Ring 6” gala on January 31 in Up-to-date York.
It’s stiff to get excited about Keyshawn’s win over 37-year-old Berinchyk because he was fighting an ancient guy who looked much smaller than him in the ring. Top Rank did a good job getting Keyshawn to fight Berinchyk because he was the weakest link.
“Can he get that momentum back in 2026? He had two of the biggest wins of his career,” Mannix said. “We know about boxing. It only takes one fight, one great performance on one large stage to get the momentum back. I think Keyshawn is on the perfect stage to do it.”
If the illusion breaks
If Keyshawn loses or looks bad after winning, Turki Alalshikh will have to reconsider using him in future fights because it may not be worth it. Losing to Jamain wouldn’t be a result of inaction. This would be a signal that Keyshawn was never as good as people thought.
The Supreme Rank’s careful selection of partners masked his flaws made a good impression on him. Keyshawn is still the same player Andy Cruz easily defeated at the 2020 Olympics. The only thing that has changed is that he has faced marginal adversity throughout his miniature career.
