UFC Vegas 120 live blog: Mateusz Gamrot vs. Quillan Salkilld

This is the live blog for Mateusz Gamrot vs. Quillan Salkilld, the lightweight main event for Saturday's UFC Vegas 120 fight card at the newly renovated Meta APEX in Las Vegas.

Gamrot enters the headliner after flip-flopping wins and losses over his past five bouts. In his most recent outing, the former KSW champion submitted Esteban Ribovics with an arm-triangle choke in the second round at UFC 327 in April. This will be Gamrot's third UFC headliner, going 1-1 in octagon main events with a decision win over Arman Tsarukyan, and suffering a first-round stoppage loss to Charles Oliveira this past October at UFC Rio.

Salkilld gets his first UFC main event spot after winning his first five bouts inside the octagon. The 26-year-old has stopped four of his five opponents and earning four bonuses — including his first-round TKO victory against Beneil Dariush at UFC Perth in May.

Check out the UFC Vegas 120 live blog below.

According to FanDuel, Quillan Salkilld closes as a slight favorite at -144, while the comeback on Mateusz Gamrot is +122.

Salkilld is a very fun and skilled fighter with a super bright future at lightweight. He's looked really good, and he's shown some low-key fight IQ things that most aren't able to pick up — from luring opponents into standup exchanges he wants, and even with his defensive grappling abilities. However, the experience difference concerns me, especially against a guy like Gamrot who has fought the best the division has to offer, and makes very few mistakes.

Joe Pyfer got his big step-up moment, and got taught a vet lesson by Jack Hermansson — but one he learned a lot from. I feel as if Salkilld is about to get his first, super valuable UFC lesson to learn handed to him tonight. The pick is Gamrot via submission in Round 3.

Salkilld out first and is ready to go. Here comes Gamrot to “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark†by Fall Out Boy, and the crowd in the newly renovated APEX seems to enjoy it.

The judges are Mike Bell, Derek Cleary and Sal D'Amato, with Jason Herzog serving as the referee.

We're off! They march to the center of the octagon, Gamrot lands a nice counter right hand after Salkilld lands a jab, leg kick as well. Salkilld lands another nice jab and Gamrot shoots a single. Salkilld trying to defend and doing a nice job of it getting in a top position on the ground. Gamrot back to the feet and they clinch against the fence.

Gamrot going for a heel hook and it looks tight. Salkilld shaking his head, and eventually rolls out of it. Back to the feet they go and Salkilld just misses with a kick. Gamrot, I'm sure, knew he'd have to go through the fire early, and he is. Salkilld shoots a takedown and gets it. Wow! Salkilld going for the back and rear-naked choke, Gamrot scrambles. Salkilld throws his legs up, Gamrot trying to turn in, but Salkilld doing a spectacular job keeping position.

Salkilld puts the hooks in and locks in the RNC and it's TIGHT. Gamrot taps! What a performance. Salkilld is for real, for real!

OFFICIAL RESULT: Quillan Salkilld def. Mateusz Gamrot via submission (RNC) — Round 1, 4:25

Post-Fight: Salkilld says the top-5 better watch out while he loves his performance. No callout, but says he wants a top-5 guy — but there's just no chance he gets it.

Brendan Allen accuses Dricus du Plessis of taking ‘easier’ Kamaru Usman fight

Brendan Allen accuses Dricus du Plessis of taking ‘easier’ Kamaru Usman fight
Brendan
Allen has criticized Dricus Du
Plessis for allegedly avoiding a fight with him.

A matchup between Allen and du Plessis was reportedly in the works
in January. According to Allen, the bout fell through after he was
told du Plessis was injured. Du Plessis went on to face former

Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder Kamaru
Usman in July, winning by unanimous decision.

Brendan Allen explains why he believes he was a tougher
opponent than Kamaru Usman

Allen has accused du Plessis of avoiding him in favor of an easier
fight against Usman. “All In†acknowledges that the 39-year-old
former welterweight champion remains a bigger draw. However, Allen
believes he presents a tougher matchup, prompting du Plessis to
take the “easier fight.â€

“I know he's had the opportunity to fight me and he took the easier
route,†Allen told UFC on Paramount+. “He can say whatever he
wants; it's a fact. We were supposed to fight. And somehow it got
worked that Kamaru's name got thrown in there. And obviously Kamaru
is a bigger draw even though he's older, up a weight class. He took
the easier fight, plain and simple. Everyone knows it was the
easier fight. I'm bigger, I'm stronger, I'm faster. I think I'm
more talented, but people are gonna play off of Kamaru's resume.
OK, play off his resume, but I don't think that Kamaru can make it
five rounds with me.â€

Allen (27-7) enters his
UFC Vegas 122 main event against Christian
Leroy Duncan (15-2) on Saturday in Las Vegas with three
consecutive victories. Duncan has won five straight fights.

Morning Report | Sean Strickland and Nassourdine Imavov have heated run-in at the UFC P.I.

Let me start with what this isn't:

What is your pick for the highest level fight we have ever seen inside the cage?

This can be:

  • A fight with to guys at the absolute peak of their powers (Cejudo vs MM, Dillashaw vs Cruz, Jones vs Cormier)

  • A fight that had an insane technical level between both guys that blew your mind (Evloev vs Sterling comes to mind)

Have a little fun with it and as always disagree vehemently but respectfully! 🫡

Vertigo delays Alvin Hines' pursuit of first UFC victory
Alvin
Hines' pursuit of his first win in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship has been delayed.

Hines was scheduled to face Gabriel
Lourenco in a heavyweight bout at
UFC Fight Night 293 on Nov. 7 at Meta Apex in Las Vegas.
However, Hines has announced his withdrawal from the fight because
of vertigo.

Alvin Hines withdraws from UFC Fight Night 293 against Gabriel
Lourenco

Hines plans to continue training with adjustments while recovering
from vertigo and hopes to return to competition at full
strength.

“I had to pull out of this one for medical reasons due to vertigo,â€
Hines wrote on Instagram. “It wasn't an easy decision, but I know I
need to be able to step into that Octagon at 100% and perform to my
true potential. I'm going to continue fight camp with some
adjustments while I work through this and get myself back to where
I need to be. I'm not walking away from the fight. I'm taking the
time to get right so when I'm back in there, I can put on the kind
of fight I know I'm capable of. I'm sorry for the change, and I
appreciate everyone who was looking forward to seeing me compete.
Trust me, I'll be back. Sometimes the hardest part of fighting
isn't throwing punches. It's knowing when to step back, get right,
and prepare for the next battle. This is just a setback. Not the
end of the story.â€

Hines (7-2) was an undefeated prospect with six finishes in seven
victories when he signed with the UFC last year. However, “Goozieâ€
has lost both of his Octagon appearances. Meanwhile, Lourenco (8-1)
was slated to make his promotional debut against Hines after
earning a contract with a first-round knockout victory over Charlie
Cleveland on
Dana White's Contender Series in September.
