Joyce had emerged as a possible replacement after Tony Yoka withdrew from his scheduled challenge because of a back injury. With Joyce already on the same IBA Pro 19 card, many viewed him as the logical choice to step in and challenge Gassiev for the heavyweight title.

Instead, the opportunity has gone to the unbeaten but largely untested Kadiru, whose résumé lacks the kind of notable victories Joyce has accumulated during his career.

For Joyce, the decision is a difficult setback. At 40 years old, time is no longer on his side, and chances to fight for a world championship are becoming increasingly scarce. Even though he has lost four of his last five bouts, Joyce had remained in the mix for the Gassiev fight after Yoka withdrew, giving him what may have been his final realistic path to a heavyweight world title.

Rather than challenging for the championship, Joyce will stay on the undercard against unbeaten Russian Artem Suslenkov in a high-risk fight that offers little reward. A victory is unlikely to move him straight back into world title contention, while another defeat could effectively end any remaining hopes of competing for a major belt.

The timing makes the disappointment even greater. The heavyweight division has recently undergone significant changes after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the WBA, WBC and IBF titles. Gassiev was elevated from WBA “regular” champion to full champion, opening the door for a first title defense that briefly looked like it could fall to Joyce. Instead, that opportunity belongs to Kadiru.

It is a bitter pill to swallow for Joyce. After waiting in the wings for the call, he has been overlooked in favor of a challenger with a far lower profile and no signature wins. Unless another unexpected opportunity emerges, Joyce may have seen his last realistic chance to fight for a heavyweight world title slip away.

Bob Arum Identifies Key Fighter with Edge to Beat Keyshawn Davis in Boxing Showdown

"Bob Arum Identifies Key Fighter with Edge to Beat Keyshawn Davis in Boxing Showdown"

Bob Arum has revealed his concern about who could be the first man to beat unbeaten star Keyshawn Davis.

Davis previously reigned as WBO lightweight champion, but after losing his belt on the scales, he has since headed up to 140lbs and earned wins over Jamaine Ortiz and Nahir Albright over the past six months.

He is now the mandatory challenger for Devin Haney’s WBO welterweight title, with the pair having been given until July 20 to reach an agreement.

If negotiations collapse then their matchup will go to a purse bid hearing, though Top Rank boss Arum is hopeful that his promotional outfit can spearhead a deal.

Haney claimed his WBO title by dethroning Brian Norman Jrwho he floored in round two before scoring a unanimous decision victory last November.

Several months later, ‘The Dream’ was linked to a unification match with Rolando Romero, who now appears set to defend his WBA title against Teofimo Lopez.

Since then, Haney has more recently engaged in talks with Gervonta Davis, who his father, Bill Haney, has named at the top target.

That said, a mandatory title defence against Keyshawn Davis could represent the more realistic option, especially if Top Rank are able to offer the type of money that both fighters feel they deserve.

While speaking with FightHypeveteran promoter Arum expressed his desire to make what he believes is a “fan-friendly fight”, despite conceding that Davis, who he promotes, is likely to face a significant challenge.

“I think that’s a spectacular fight, a real fan-friendly fight. I hope we can make that fight. I know our people have talked to Haney, and will be talking to Keyshawn.

“You have to give the edge to Haney, because of his experience, but I wouldn’t count Keyshawn out [against] anyone.”

With the negotiation deadline quickly approaching, a decision is expected soon on whether or not the bout will indeed take place.

Moses Itauma Responds to Usyks Title Vacating and Retirement Plans Before Their Potential Fight

Moses Itauma Responds to Usyk's Title Vacating and Retirement Plans Before Their Potential Fight

Despite interest from fans and previous backing from boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh, Moses Itauma will almost certainly not have the chance to face Oleksandr Usyk before the Ukrainian retires.

Usyk recently announced that he has vacated all three of his world titles and plans to have just one more fight before hanging up the gloves on a sure-fire Hall of Fame career.

It means that there will be no opportunity for Itauma – very much considered the future of the division – to force a changing of the guard inside the ropes. The fight never did look likely, with Usyk saying that he would ‘break’ Itauma, despite his willingness.

Speaking to IFL TV, Itauma reacted to the news.

“To be fair, he’s earned his stripes. He was [undisputed] cruiserweight and heavyweight champion. At the same time, it made it difficult for all of us. But, now that they’re all separated, we can start collecting some.

On the reports that the Ukrainian’s final fight will come against Deontay Wilderthe young Brit was less forgiving but says he understands the motivation.

“Who’d want to watch that? Fair enough, he’s achieved more than I have, so I can’t say nothing … He wants the paper. You’ve got to remember, when Usyk was a cruiserweight and in his early heavyfights fights, he wasn’t making as much money as he in these last couple of years. I don’t blame him. He’s from a country where boxing isn’t as publicised as the UK or US, and I don’t blame him for making the most out of what he’s got.”

Finally, asked if he was disappointed that they will never share the ring, Itauma said:

“He’s not really my generation, so I’m not too bothered. Having fought [some] people in the generation before me, that’s a blessing.”

What Usyk’s decision does do is move Itauma one step closer to becoming a heavyweight champion at 21. Next month, he faces world-level contender Filip Hrgovicwith a win cementing his status as WBO mandatory challenger for Daniel Dubois as well as keeping an opportunity to fight Frank Sanchez for the vacant IBF title alive.

“This is for you. We also have Joshua and Tyson Fury this year. We don’t choose the place until now,” said Alalshikh.

“I tell you from the beginning. It depends about England. Give us all what we need. We want the fight here in England, but we want the time zone of all the world, especially in America.

“If they allow us to have Wembley late in the night, we want to do it in England. Now it’s about the time and the viewership. Yes, and the subscribers. We talk to the mayors and Prince Abdullah will try to help and the taxi of London will push.”

Alalshikh’s latest comments suggest the negotiations have shifted away from finding a stadium and toward solving the logistical challenge of television scheduling.

A traditional evening start at Wembley would air in the afternoon across much of the United States, while a later start would place the main event in a far more valuable American prime-time window. With the fight expected to attract one of the largest global audiences in boxing, maximizing international viewership has become a central part of the discussions.

Alalshikh also revealed that talks are planned with London officials as his team works to secure the necessary approvals.

Before any deal can be finalized, both heavyweights have business to take care of. Joshua returns against Kristian Prenga in Jeddah on July 25, while Fury meets veteran Mariusz Wach in Thailand on July 24. Victories for both would clear the path for the long-awaited all-British heavyweight showdown later this year.
