PARIS – Olympic champion Imane Khelif injured her left shoulder during a weekend training session and was forced to postpone a professional fight scheduled for later this month in Paris.
Organizers said Monday that her April 23 fight at the iconic Salle Wagram in the French capital against German boxer Julia Igel has been delayed to a date that has yet to be announced.
“This decision follows the injury suffered by Imane Khelif during this weekend’s training session in Paris,” organizers said in a statement.
A medical examination conducted on Monday revealed “painful left shoulder syndrome,” they said. “Due to the intensity of the biomechanical demands associated with high-level boxing, the medical team has determined that the athlete’s condition is temporarily incompatible with competition.”
Two WBA title fights were also supposed to take place at the gala, so the organizers decided to postpone the entire evening to another date.
“The health and physical integrity of our athletes remains our absolute priority. We wish Imane Khelif a speedy recovery. During an event of this importance, including the WBA Championships, it was necessary to provide optimal conditions for all participating boxers,” said former boxer Brahim Asloum, organizer of the gala.
Tickets already purchased will be refunded, the organizers add.
Khelif won Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Games amid international scrutiny surrounding her and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting – another gold medalist – and misconceptions about the gender of both boxers.
Both fighters were cleared to compete by the IOC after being disqualified from the 2023 world championships by the Russian-dominated International Boxing Association. The IBA said the women failed unspecified qualifying tests.
However, the IOC applied gender eligibility rules used at previous Olympics and found that Khelif and Lin passed the test.
Last year, World Boxing took over as the sport’s governing body and last August implemented a gender eligibility policy requiring all fighters to undergo a one-time genetic test to detect the presence of the Y chromosome. Since the test was implemented, Khelif has not competed in World Boxing-sanctioned events.
