Mayweather appeared twelve times at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and generated a total of an estimated $201 million in live gates. The sphere changes emphasis. The number of seats remains comparable, although the building surrounds each section with LED lights, surround sound and touch-sensitive seating.
The internal LED display covers 160,000 square feet of curved surface with 16K resolution. There is no overhead jumbotron. The entire dome becomes a screen. During UFC 306 in September 2024, the promotion used a full indoor screen to change the environment between fights. In boxing, this allows for a dome to walk around the ring, replays covering the ceiling, and graphics between rounds taking up the entire field of view.
The audio system consists of over 160,000 individually amplified speakers. It allows directional sound distribution throughout the room. Theoretically, manufacturing could isolate the gloves’ contact with the canvas or corner instructions and place them in specific sections. Whether or not the September card utilizes this level of integration remains undisclosed.
The seats support touch function. Chairs can vibrate or move in sync with the contents. UFC 306 activated this feature during fights. The Sphere has a capacity of 17,500 to 18,600 people, which is comparable to the MGM Grand and T-Mobile Arena. Seating capacity remains the same as other arenas in Las Vegas. The way each place experiences combat is changing.
If there is no augment in the stock of seats, the margin depends on the price and value of the rights.
UFC 306 reportedly cost around $20 million to put on, far exceeding the organization’s standard pay-per-view production budget. The live gate totaled $21.8 million, the highest in UFC history. This event demonstrated that the building could support combat sports without visibility or technical failures.
The Mayweather-Pacquiao event has a separate production structure through EverWonder Studio, Hidden Empire Film Group and Limitless X Holdings, as well as Mayweather Promotions and Manny Pacquiao Promotions. Netflix will stream content globally to its subscriber base without classic pay-per-view fees.
The first Mayweather-Pacquiao fight in 2015 generated 4.6 million pay-per-view buys at $99.95 per household. The model currently focuses on rights fees and subscriber value. Netflix reportedly paid over $50 million for the Jake Paul and Mike Tyson card in November 2024. A similar commitment in this case would result in a financial burden on the platform’s performance, rather than the sum of the individual purchases.
Ticket prices become a key variable. With seating capacity comparable to other Las Vegas arenas, the average ticket price must offset the additional production costs. UFC 306 showed that buyers will accept higher prices here.
Boxing in Las Vegas has moved from Caesars Palace to the MGM Grand and T-Mobile Arena in different eras. The Sphere introduces a building focused on immersion. September 19 will show whether this format will enhance professional boxing’s main event or remain a one-night affair built around two established names.
The show does not guarantee the drama of competition.
