The long-awaited rematch will be the main event promoted by Matchroom this Saturday night, as super lightweight rivals Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall fight it out again over twelve rounds at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

Live coverage of the Taylor vs. Catterall match DAZN worldwide and on ESPN+ in the US.

This is a far cry from their original meeting, however, as Taylor (19-1, 13 KO) entered the February 2022 clash with Catterall (28-1, 13 KO) holding all four major belts at 140 pounds.

The Scot became the IBF world champion in the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series in 2019, and in the final he defeated Regis Prograis and won the WBA “super” crown and the Muhammad Ali trophy.

After a routine defense, “The Tartan Tornado” secured his legacy as the undisputed champion, defeating Jose Ramirez twice and earning minor points while adding the WBC and WBO belts.

Catterall was waiting in the wings as a WBO mandatory fighter and when he got his chance in Glasgow, many didn’t give him a chance.

It was a tough fight, but the guy dropped Taylor in the eighth and it looked like he had done enough to win, but the judges thought otherwise and awarded the 33-year-old the split decision victory.

There was no immediate rematch because Chorley man made a bid to defeat Darragh Foley in May 2023, with Taylor losing all but the WBO belts due to various obligations he could not fulfill, with that belt and his undefeated record going to Teofimo Lopez, who won a unanimous decision in Fresh York in June last year.

Catterall was last eliminated in October 2023, easily winning on the cards against a faded Jorge Linares. This fight has been discussed and postponed several times, with the April date being rescheduled for this one due to Taylor’s injury.

Clarke-Zorro fight for the British belt

The vacant British cruiserweight title hangs in the balance as Cheavon Clarke faces Ellis Zorro.

Clarke (8-0, 6 KO) is fresh off an impressive fourth-round stoppage of Tommy McCarthy in January, while Zorro (17-1, 7 KO) has taken on a gigantic challenge in the form of IBF world champion Jai Opetai of Saudi Arabia Arabia and was blown out in the middle of the round.

Cully argues with Patera

An intriguing fight will take place in the lightweight division, where Gary Cully (17-1, 10 KO) will be able to continue his comeback after a shocking defeat to Jose Felix last year, scoring points against former European champion Francesco Patera (29-4, 11 KO) ).

Donovan fights Ritson

Another tester should see that the talented Paddy Donovan (13-0, 10 KO) will remain undefeated and that the Irishman can get a win on the schedule against Lewis Ritson (23-3, 13 KO), who is in his heaviest ever weight class, and was stopped in the ninth round by Ohara Davies in his last fight last March.

Undercard remaining

The only fighter in the eighth round is a middleweight, and George Liddard (6-0, 3 KO) may remove Graham McCormack (9-3-1, 1 KO) from the fight before the final bell.

In six rounds, Emmanuel Buttigieg (3-0, 1 KO) can win by stoppage against Anas Isarti (4-2) in the super welterweight and super featherweight divisions Giorgio Visioli (2-0, 2 KO) can do the same in his match against Sergio Obadai (6-3-1, 3 KO).

Deontay Wilder’s father called ‘crazy’ and boxing career hangs in the balance – EXCLUSIVE

Published

on

Richard Riakporhe has mocked Deontay Wilder’s father Gary for suggesting the Bronze Bomber still has a “few good years” left in the sport. Wilder has recently suffered a dramatic decline, most recently hitting a novel low when he was defeated by Zhilei Zhang in Saudi Arabia.

The hard-hitting American was knocked out in the fifth round, with Zhang unleashing two right hooks, sending his opponent to the canvas. The manner in which he lost led to calls for Wilder to retire, including: from his own mother’s side, but his father still believes that he should continue to fight.

In a speech earlier this month, the elder Wilder pointed the finger at his son’s coach Malik Scott and said: “You don’t need a buddy to coach you. It’s not too delayed for [Deontay]. I believe he still has a few good years ahead of him.

“Deontay has always been dull. Now Malik is trying to train him to be a boxer, and if you look at it, you can see that Deontay is not comfortable where he is.”

Riakporhe, who faced Chris Billam-Smith for the WBO cruiserweight title on Saturday night, believes there is still hope for Wilder but disagrees with his father’s hopeful view.

“I don’t know what it is, but something is missing,” Riakporhe told Express Sport. “If he can fix this, he can definitely do something. I think I read somewhere that his dad said he might spend another few years in the sport. I think this is crazy. He’s almost turning 40!

“But I would say he can definitely have a few more fights and he can end it all. Something is wrong, something is missing. In the heavyweight division, all it takes is one good win and that’s it, he’s there.

“There are so many fighters in the heavyweight division who have lost so many times and are still at the top. “I think if he can fix it, then fine, but if he can’t fix it, he shouldn’t get in the ring again.”

Wilder suggested before the fight with Zhang that he would retire if he did not win, but the 38-year-old has not yet confirmed any plans to hang up his gloves. He has lost four of his last five appearances, with two of those defeats coming at the hands of Tyson Fury.

He was also defeated on points by Joseph Parker before losing to Zhang.

Mike “Iron Mike” Tyson was scheduled to face Paul on July 20 in a controversial fight, but it was postponed until further notice because Tyson was deemed unfit to fight due to a flare-up of an ulcer.

I am talking with Foreign poker sitesKhan said: “If the weight is right, I don’t mind giving up 20 pounds.

“It just depends on the weight because I know Jake gained a lot of weight to fight Mike. Jake isn’t usually this gigantic, but he’s gained a lot of weight, so it’s up to him to decide if he’s willing to lose the weight and we’ll find a middle ground somewhere.

We’ll see, but I haven’t had any calls about it, so I assume they’re still hoping to fight Mike and he won’t want to get beat up before then. These guys are halfway through training, drinking at camp – they don’t even have a camp – they make the sport look bad, so if it means I have to knock out KSI, Jake Paul and his brother Logan to teach them a lesson, I’ll do it this”.

Mirror reports that the former boxer added: “Honestly, I don’t think Jake Paul will want anything to do with me.

“I want to give this boxing influencer a break because these guys are destroying boxing and until they get a good beating they won’t realize that boxing is for real fighters who take the sport seriously.”

Chris Billam-Smith defended his WBO cruiserweight title for a second time, exacting revenge on Richard Riakporhe at Selhurst Park with a comfortable victory on the scorecards.

The pair met in July 2019, when Riakporhe (17-1, 13 KO) scored a seventh-round knockout at the O2 Arena in London, en route to a split decision after ten rounds, and have since gone their separate ways. Billam-Smith (20-1, 13 KO) became world champion last May with a majority decision victory over Lawrence Okolie before forcing Mateusz Masternak to withdraw from the fight after eight rounds in his first defense last December. Riakporhe steadily climbed to the world level and had a five-fight knockout streak.

After a lively and technical first three rounds, it was mostly a fight of punches, but when one of them had success, it was quickly stifled by the holding of the other.

Billam-Smith was getting better at the action and his attacks were more successful than the challenger’s at mid-range, but eventually the pair opened up in the eighth and Riakporhe landed a solid right hand, but again it was the champion who had the last word.

Riakporhe came on forceful in round nine, smashing Billam-Smith’s rubber shield with a powerful right hand, but he was unable to sustain the success and Billam-Smith remained slippery and struck first in the championship rounds.
