The long-awaited rematch will be the main event promoted by Matchroom this Saturday night, as super lightweight rivals Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall fight it out again over twelve rounds at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

Live coverage of the Taylor vs. Catterall match DAZN worldwide and on ESPN+ in the US.

This is a far cry from their original meeting, however, as Taylor (19-1, 13 KO) entered the February 2022 clash with Catterall (28-1, 13 KO) holding all four major belts at 140 pounds.

The Scot became the IBF world champion in the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series in 2019, and in the final he defeated Regis Prograis and won the WBA “super” crown and the Muhammad Ali trophy.

After a routine defense, “The Tartan Tornado” secured his legacy as the undisputed champion, defeating Jose Ramirez twice and earning minor points while adding the WBC and WBO belts.

Catterall was waiting in the wings as a WBO mandatory fighter and when he got his chance in Glasgow, many didn’t give him a chance.

It was a tough fight, but the guy dropped Taylor in the eighth and it looked like he had done enough to win, but the judges thought otherwise and awarded the 33-year-old the split decision victory.

There was no immediate rematch because Chorley man made a bid to defeat Darragh Foley in May 2023, with Taylor losing all but the WBO belts due to various obligations he could not fulfill, with that belt and his undefeated record going to Teofimo Lopez, who won a unanimous decision in Fresh York in June last year.

Catterall was last eliminated in October 2023, easily winning on the cards against a faded Jorge Linares. This fight has been discussed and postponed several times, with the April date being rescheduled for this one due to Taylor’s injury.

Clarke-Zorro fight for the British belt

The vacant British cruiserweight title hangs in the balance as Cheavon Clarke faces Ellis Zorro.

Clarke (8-0, 6 KO) is fresh off an impressive fourth-round stoppage of Tommy McCarthy in January, while Zorro (17-1, 7 KO) has taken on a gigantic challenge in the form of IBF world champion Jai Opetai of Saudi Arabia Arabia and was blown out in the middle of the round.

Cully argues with Patera

An intriguing fight will take place in the lightweight division, where Gary Cully (17-1, 10 KO) will be able to continue his comeback after a shocking defeat to Jose Felix last year, scoring points against former European champion Francesco Patera (29-4, 11 KO) ).

Donovan fights Ritson

Another tester should see that the talented Paddy Donovan (13-0, 10 KO) will remain undefeated and that the Irishman can get a win on the schedule against Lewis Ritson (23-3, 13 KO), who is in his heaviest ever weight class, and was stopped in the ninth round by Ohara Davies in his last fight last March.

Undercard remaining

The only fighter in the eighth round is a middleweight, and George Liddard (6-0, 3 KO) may remove Graham McCormack (9-3-1, 1 KO) from the fight before the final bell.

In six rounds, Emmanuel Buttigieg (3-0, 1 KO) can win by stoppage against Anas Isarti (4-2) in the super welterweight and super featherweight divisions Giorgio Visioli (2-0, 2 KO) can do the same in his match against Sergio Obadai (6-3-1, 3 KO).

UKAD releases statement after dead boxer was banned for four years for failing drug test

Published

on

The British Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD) has issued an apologetic statement after issuing a four-year boxing ban to Moises Calleros, who died three months ago.

On Monday, UKAD announced that Calleros had been banned from the sport after his sample taken after last year’s defeat to Galal Yafai tested positive for cocaine. However, shortly after the statement was published, the anti-doping authority learned that the Mexican boxer had died in March at the age of 34 of a suspected heart attack.

Moving on to X, Yafai – who secured a technical knockout victory over Calleros in the Anthony Joshua vs Jermaine Franklin fight last April – shed lithe on the death of his former opponent. “He passed away in March, if you didn’t already know! RIP,” he wrote.

Realizing their mistake, UKAD immediately removed the statement which read: “Mexican professional boxer Moises Calleros has been banned from all World Anti-Doping Code sports for four years for an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) due to the presence and presence of Exploit prohibited substance.

“Mr Calleros was tested by the UK Anti-Doping Authority (UKAD) on 1 April 2023 following his fight with Galal Yafai at London’s O2 Arena. Analysis of his sample revealed the presence of cocaine and its metabolite, benzoylecgonine. Cocaine is prohibited during competition. It is also classified as an “addictive substance” on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of prohibited substances.

Fans online were quick to target UKAD, claiming their statement was in indigent taste. “You should be ashamed of yourselves to announce that he was on drugs and is dead,” wrote one X user, while another added: “This just goes to show how disgraceful the current arrangement really is.”

The organization issued a further apology, writing: “The United Kingdom Anti-Doping Authority (UKAD) has today received information regarding the death of Mexican professional boxer Moises Calleros. UKAD received this information shortly after details of the outcome of Mr Calleros’ case were published under UK anti-doping rules.

“Unfortunately, UKAD had no information on the melancholy death of Mr. Calleros at the time of publication and has now removed all details of this case from its channels.”

Calleros had his first professional fight in October 2008 and fought twice for the WBO interim minimumweight belt. Ultimately, he lost both title fights, first defeating Tatsuya Fukuhara in February 2017, and a year later, Ryuya Yamanaka.

After losing to Yafai at the O2 Arena in London, Calleros fought just one more fight before his premature exit, securing a first-round knockout over compatriot Gerardo Verde in Ensenada, Mexico last December.

Over the course of his 16-year professional boxing career, Calleros has amassed a record of 37-11-1 with 20 knockouts. His most notable opponents include former WBC flyweight world champion Julio Cesar Martinez, former IBF mini flyweight champion Jose Argumedo and former unified mini flyweight world champion Francisco Rodriguez.

Roy Jones Jr’s son takes his own life as the boxing icon makes an emotional statement

Published

on

Boxing great Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. announced that his son DeAndre took his own life on Saturday. Jones confirmed the news in a statement on Monday various social media platforms.

“Sadly, my son DeAndre took his own life on Saturday,” Jones’ statement read. “I am so grateful that God allowed me to come home on Friday evening to spend the last night of my life with me and my family.

“I know many people are going through arduous times right now, but nothing is worth taking your own life. God gives them and God should take them away. Please respect our privacy as my family and I process this loss. Thank you for your love and support.”

DeAndre was one of the boxing legend’s three children, including twin DeShaun and younger brother Roy III, who grew up during the height of Jones’ illustrious boxing career. Considered one of the greatest pound-for-pound contenders in history, Jones was named the 1990s “Fighter of the Decade” by the American Boxing Writers Association and was a world champion in four different weight classes, from middleweight to heavyweight.

However, Jones was intentional about making his children fight, and DeAndre spent most of his life passionate about music. As a teenager, he formed the aspiring pop group “3D”, a reference to the alliterative names of himself, DeShaun, and second cousin Dyllon, who performed before his father’s 2008 fight with Joe Calzaghe at Madison Square Garden. Most recently, DeAndre released a single with Jones and artist SM BULLET titled “Never Turn My Back” in August 2023.

“We take our responsibility as role models very seriously,” DeAndre previously said of his musical group. “Many adolescent people don’t have positive role models at home like we do, so we hope to bring something fresh and positive to our discussion that can have a good influence on others. We want our music to be fun and pure so that everyone around the world, of all ages, can enjoy our music.

Jones’ social media statement includes a call for strength to get through “arduous times,” an ongoing point of support for the retired boxer. The 55-year-old Florida native has previously spoken about his struggles with mental health, which he previously considered ending his own life.

“Yes, that’s true,” Jones told the Daily Mail. “It was under pressure from my father. I thought if I had to endure this, I would die, but then I talked to God and said, “Well, if I do this, because this is the way you want me to be, you want me to succeed at something, but it’s part of the process, so I have to stay and keep up.”

Mike Tyson poses with Brazilian icon Ronaldo to show off his weight transformation

Published

on

Mike Tyson posed with Brazilian legend Ronaldo to show off his physique as he tries to overcome health problems and ultimately clash with Jake Paul. Tyson has been preparing furiously for his return to the ring, but health complications led to the delay of his fight with the YouTuber-turned-boxer.

“Iron Mike” was originally scheduled to face Paul on July 20. However, due to the unexpected flare-up of the ulcer, which left Tyson medically unable to fight, the controversial fight was postponed to November 15.

Photos of Tyson posing with another sports icon, Ronaldo, appeared online. The striker is one of the best players in history. He played for the likes of Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, while with Brazil he was a two-time World Cup champion in 1994 and 2002.

Towards the end of his brilliant, if injury-riddled, career, Ronaldo gained weight. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner weighed almost 300 pounds at one point, but the 47-year-old looked in great shape standing alongside Tyson.

Tyson also seemed healthier. Earlier this month, he officially withdrew from his original date after his health deteriorated on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles.

The former undisputed heavyweight champion felt nauseous and dizzy and required medical attention. Paramedics eventually boarded the plane to aid him after it landed in Los Angeles.

As a result, Tyson was forced to postpone his fight with Paul. The fight was widely criticized throughout the build-up due to the age difference between the two rivals, although Tyson has remained positive since his health problems as he still hopes to win.

After the fight was delayed, Tyson said in a statement: “Although we had to postpone the fight, I will resume training soon. I am grateful to the medical staff who treated me, as well as MVP, Netflix and AT&T Stadium for working diligently to find the best time for all parties to reschedule the game. Even though we have a novel date, the result will be the same regardless of when we fight. Jake Paul gets knocked out. On Friday, November 15, watch it in person at AT&T Stadium or live on Netflix.”

By returning to the ring against Paul, Tyson is set to make a momentous comeback decades after retiring from professional boxing midway through his match with Kevin McBride. The former heavyweight titan’s last fight was an eight-round no-point exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr just four years ago.

Paul, who boasts a 9-1 professional record, including a knockout victory over Ryan Bourland, will face Tyson in eight two-minute rounds. Under the rules, Tyson must undergo a series of brain and heart scans to compete.

The anticipated fight between Paul and Tyson has been rescheduled for November 15 at AT&T Stadium. The card will feature women’s boxing pioneer Katie Taylor in a rematch with Amanda Serrano and former UFC fighter Darren Till facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
