By Elliot Raines: Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed last night that he and Jaron “Boots” Ennis will be in attendance for the Vergil Ortiz Jr. fight next Saturday. vs. Erickson Lubin, which will take place on November 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Lubin can change everything
Hearn says Ennis (35-0, 31 KO) wants to be there because he hopes to face WBC interim junior middleweight champion Ortiz Jr. (23-0, 21 KOs).
It is unclear whether Vergil Jr. and his promoters from Golden Boy Promotions will want to face Ennis in early 2026. While at ringside, “Boots” and Hearn can employ this as a way to create public pressure. Hearn mentioned last week that Golden Boy had remained hushed on the Vergil Jr. matchup. with Ennis. At this point, he’s not sure they still want this fight.
If Lubin (27-2, 19 KO) wins on Saturday, it could make things easier for Hearn as he is fearless and will likely take the fight to Ennis if it pays off.
“We’ll be there next week. You should ask them. “We want this fight,” Eddie Hearn said Carlos Linares last Saturday night, referring to his and Jaron “Boots” Ennis’ plans to be ringside for the Vergil Ortiz Jr. fight. with Erickson Lubin, which will take place this Saturday, November 8 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Golden Boy is hushed in 2026 talks
Hearn didn’t seem entirely convinced that Vergil Jr. and Golden Boy will fight. The way Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya spoke may give some people the impression that he is playing games and has no interest in allowing his golden goose, Vergil Jr., to fight Ennis and watch him lose. He apparently saw what happened to Ennis’ last opponent, Uisma Lima, who was knocked out in the first round on October 11, 2025.
De La Hoya pushes back
“We all know Boots doesn’t want to fight Vergil,” De La Hoya said mediagiving the impression that it’s Ennis who doesn’t want the fight, not them.
“I won’t waste my time going to Dallas for the holidays. This isn’t my show. I could employ the weekend off. But ‘Boots’ wants to go. He wants to show the world that we want this fight and we want it now. Don’t duck, don’t run. But he [Vergil Ortiz Jr.] first he must defeat Lubin. It’s a great fight. We’ll see,” Hearn said.
Disturbingly, Golden Boy was the ghost of Hearn, who no longer responded to him about the fight between Vergil Jr. and Ennis. Ortiz Jr-Lubin’s presence at ringside on Saturday night may not change anything. If De La Hoya and Golden Boy don’t want this fight for their fighter, Vergil Jr., it won’t matter if “Boots” is there.
Plan B options on the table
“Murtazaliev, Fundora, Baraou, Zayas and Charlo. I don’t know, but it’s going to be a gigantic fight,” Hearn said when asked if he had a “Plan B” option if he couldn’t make Ennis vs. Vergil Jr. happen.
It would be wise for Hearn to start planning a fight for Ennis against one of these fighters. This should have already been their first priority when Golden Boy stopped talking to them about the fight between Vergil Jr. and Ennis.
