By Graham Ilford: Coach Kenny Ellis thinks it’s a good idea to have Jaron “Boots” Ennis and his promoter Eddie Hearn appear at ringside for the Vergil Ortiz Jr. match. vs. Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (27-2, 19 KO) this Saturday, November 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Ring strategy from Hearn
Ellis says the presence of “Boots” Ennis (35-0, 31 KO) at ringside will show doubters that he really wants to fight Vergil Jr. (23-0, 21 KOs). Many of them believe that “Boots” avoided Ortiz Jr. out of fear. However, by showing up on Saturday, Ennis can show them he wants to face WBC interim junior middleweight champion Vergil Jr.
“Boots” won the WBA interim 154-pound title with a first-round knockout of Uisma Lima in his junior middleweight debut last month on October 11, 2025 in Philadelphia. The performance showed that Ennis is a bigger-looking fighter than when he dropped down to 147 pounds and looked emaciated at the weigh-in.
Coach Ellis predicts that “The Boots” will be too large for Vergil Jr. if this fight happens. He claims Ennis has too much on offense, defense and interior play for Ortiz Jr. he could handle it.
Responding to claims about ducks
“I think it’s a good idea to silence those who say ‘Boots don’t want it,’ but Erickson Lubin has a chance to derail the whole plan,” said coach Kenny Ellis. MillCity Boxing when asked for his thoughts on Jaron “Boot” Ennis and his promoter Eddie Hearn planning to be in the ring for the Vergil Ortiz Jr. fight. vs. Erickson Lubin this Saturday, November 8.
Kenny says Lubin has the advantage in punching power and boxing skills. With these two things on his side, he has a good chance of winning on Saturday, provided he can cope with the pressure from Ortiz Jr. He will relentlessly attack Erickson the same way Sebastian Fundora scored a ninth-round stoppage victory over “The Hammer” on April 9, 2022.
Ellis: Ennis has all the qualities
“I think ‘Boots’ is a little too much for him.” said Ellis about his thoughts on the fight between Ennis and Vergil Jr. “Inside, outside, boxing, attack, defense, a little bit of everything. ‘Boots’ has faced the style that Ortiz brings several times now and has blown away his opponents every time.”
If Lubin wins, everything will change
If Lubin wins on Saturday, it will thwart Ennis and Vergil Jr.’s fight plans. Depending on what offer he is offered, “The Hammer” Lubin may face “Boots” Ennis or potentially have a rematch with Fundora. Ortiz Jr. will have to rebuild. It wouldn’t be wise for him to face Ennis after losing to Erickson.
“I think ‘Hammer’ brings power to the table and to boxing,” said Kenny about what Lubin has in store for him in the fight against Ortiz Jr. “My prediction for this fight. If ‘Hammer’ is in top shape for the fight, I will fight ‘Hammer.’ But if he gets behind outside the gym, I’ll play with Ortiz.”
