UFC Abu Dhabi post-fight show: Reaction to Magomed Ankalaev’s stoppage win in lackluster main event

Magomed Ankalaev got back in the win column in his first fight since losing the UFC light heavyweight title, but it wasn't the most memorable performance in recent memory in the main event of UFC Abu Dhabi. Following the win, should Ankalaev get another crack at the title when Carlos Ulberg is ready to return, or does Ankalaev have more work to do?

Following the UFC's most recent Fight Night event, MMA Fighting's Mike Heck and Jed Meshew react to the card, Ankalaev's victory in the lackluster main event against Bogdan Guskov, and where he goes in a weird light heavyweight division. Additionally, they react to Ramazan Temirov's brutal knockout victory against Steve Erceg in the flyweight co-main event, Magomed Zaynukov's successful UFC debut and his ceiling at lightweight, and much more.

Watch the UFC Abu Dhabi post-fight show above, or an audio-only version of the show can also be streamed below and on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever else you get your pods.

Anthony Joshua survives 2 knockdowns, comes back to flatten Kristian Prenga in second round

Anthony Joshua almost suffered one of the most stunning upsets in history after Kristian Prenga scored two knockdowns on the former heavyweight champion in the opening round.

But just when it looked like Joshua was doomed to fail and his highly anticipated showdown against Tyson Fury would fall apart again, the British slugger recovered and came out launching bombs in the second round. With Prenga fading, Joshua unloaded a brutal right hand that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas and through the bottom rope.

It didn't take long for the referee to stop the fight with the end coming at 2:43 in the second round.

“It was more than me that just picked me up,†Joshua said about the stunning opening round. “It can't just be me. There's a higher power that's calling.â€

While he was celebrating his win, Joshua quickly turned his attention towards Fury with his promoter Eddie Hearn saying the long awaited fight was already signed for later this year.

“Have we got Tyson Fury in the room, actually?†Joshua shouted. “To more important matters, I'm going to rip his heart out. I'm the meanest and most vicious champion there's ever been. Nobody can stop me. Alexander? No, he's no Alexander.

“I respect everything that he's done and everything he's achieved but as a fighting person who's been calling for this fight for a long time … I think he fans will be in for a treat.â€

Before he gets to Fury, Joshua first had to leave the crowd on pins and needles after the way the fight started on Saturday.

In a shocking turn of events, Prenga launched an uppercut that blasted Joshua and sent him crashing to the canvas. Joshua was able to get back to his feet but he was obviously shocked at what just happened.

Prenga stayed on the attack as he kept swinging hammers trying to put Joshua back down again. Joshua was potentially dealing with some kind of leg injury after the knocked as he looked unstable whenever he was standing.

Prenga blasted Joshua with another ferocious right hand that wobbled and put the former heavyweight champion down again.

Another wild exchange ended he opening round as Joshua smiled at his opponent before returning to his corner.

As the second round got started, Joshua was aggressive throwing combinations and Prenga was seemingly losing steam. Joshua backed him into the corner and unloaded several stiff punches in succession as Prenga was forced to play defense.

Realizing that Prenga was still hurt, Joshua came after him with everything in his arsenal until he blasted the Albanian heavyweight a huge shot that put him down and he actually fell through the bottom rope. As soon as Prenga hit the canvas, it was pretty clear he was done but the referee gave him time to attempt to recover.

A moment later, the fight was waved off as Joshua celebrated his comeback victory after he hit the ground twice in the opening round.

The win puts Joshua in position for one of the biggest boxing matches of the year with all signs pointing towards a showdown against Fury before 2026 is over. There are still some details that have to be worked out like the location for the fight but it appears Joshua vs. Fury is finally going to happen.

UFC Abu Dhabi results: Magomed Ankalaev fends off Bogdan Guskov with forgettable 5th-round knockout

UFC Abu Dhabi results: Magomed Ankalaev fends off Bogdan Guskov with forgettable 5th-round knockout

Magomed Ankalaev got back to his dominant winning ways, but he probably shouldn't wait for that championship call anytime soon.

In a UFC Abu Dhabi main event that was occasionally met with boos, Ankalaev put on a workmanlike performance against short-notice replacement Bogdan Guskov before finding a finish in the final round.

Watch Ankalaev's technical knockout stoppage below.

After only a few minutes, it was clear Guskov was not prepared to throw caution to the wind in his attempt to upset a former UFC light heavyweight champion and top 5 ranked fighter. Ankalaev invited Guskov to spar with him at range and Guskov obliged, presenting little danger and allowing Ankalaev to pick him apart on the feet.

Through the first two rounds, Ankalaev had a clear advantage on the scorecards, but that had as much to do with Guskov's complete lack of offense as it did Ankalaev's methodical striking game. The short-notice underdog, known for his hard-hitting knockouts, looked timid against Ankalaev and it only got worse for Guskov as the fight went on. Making matters worse for the Etihad Arena crowd, who were vocal in their displeasure, Ankalaev was content to do just enough to earn 10-9s without coming close to a finish by the end of Round 3.

In Round 4, Guskov needed a Hail Mary finish to win and instead he was grounded and nearly choked out by Ankalaev. The former champion later took Guskov down in the fifth and continued to cruise until Marc Goddard called for a strangely timed—but merciful—stoppage 2:41 into the round.

This was an important win for Ankalaev (21-2-1), who was coming off of a disappointing 80-second loss to rival Alex Pereira in a light heavyweight championship rematch this past October. That was Ankalaev's first loss since 2018, but with his victory Saturday he is now unbeaten in 15 of his past 16 fights.

In his post-fight interview, Ankalaev put the onus on Guskov for the dull contest.

“He wasn't engaging in the striking,†Ankalaev said via a Russian translator. “I was trying to find him and he kept getting away.â€

Guskov (18-4-1) sees a five-fight unbeaten run come to an end after a disappointing performance. The Uzbek standout stepped into the UFC Abu Dhabi main event on 12 days' notice after Ankalaev's original opponent Khalil Rountree Jr. was forced out with an injury. Guskov was originally scheduled to meet Jan Blachowicz in a rematch next Saturday at UFC Belgrade.
