UFC Oklahoma City Results: Christian Leroy Duncan defeats Jared Cannonier (Highlights)

Tonight's UFC Oklahoma City event is co-headlined by a middleweight contest featuring Jared Cannonier taking on Christian Leroy Duncan.

Cannonier (18-10 MMA) will be competing for the first time since dropping a decision to Michael Page eleven months ago at UFC 319. Prior to that setback, ‘Tha Killa Gorilla' was coming off a fourth-round TKO victory over Gregory Rodrigues. The 42-year-old has gone 3-3 over his past six Octagon appearances overall.

Meanwhile, Christian Leroy Duncan (15-2 MMA) will enter this evening's co-main event on a four-fight winning streak, with his most recent victory coming over Roman Dolidze this past March in London. Prior to that, ‘CLD' was coming off back-to-back knockout victories over Eryk Anders and Marco Tulio respectively.

Round one of the UFC Oklahoma City co-main event begins and Jared Cannonier lands a hard body shot after Christian Leroy Duncan misses with a high kick. The former title challenger with a jab. ‘CLD' with some low kicks in return. Now a front kick to the body. Cannonier jumps on a single leg. Duncan answers with a jumping knee while somehow avoiding the takedown. Cannonier still has him clinched against the cage. Both men working hard or position. ‘CLD' with a couple of heel kicks to the thigh of the veteran. Cannonier tries to drag the fight to the floor. Christian Leroy Duncan avoids the takedown and lands a nice knee. He gets back to space and lands a right cross. Jared Cannonier replies with a looping left. He shoots in for a takedown and manages to push Duncan against the cage. Two minutes remain in the round. ‘CLD' reverses the position. He drops down and is able to scoop up Jared and throw him down to the canvas. ‘Tha Killa Gorilla' is back up but he eats a standing elbow for his efforts. Christian Leroy Duncan is unloading big shots now. A hard elbow and then a flying knee. Jared Cannonier is on the run now. He gets pinned against the cage and Cannonier connects with a good left hand of his own. This fight is getting interesting. Duncan gets taken down. Cannonier loses the position at the final second and we go to round two.

The second round of the UFC Oklahoma City co-main event begins and Christian Leroy Duncan comes forward and lands a hard low kick. A spinning back kick sends Jared Cannonier to the floor. ‘CLD' attacks with a flying kick as the veteran returns to his feet. That was close to being illegal. Regardless, fight continues and Duncan is now defending a single leg takedown. Cannonier lands a good standing elbow as Duncan gets back to space. A clubbing right hand over the top from Cannonier. Christian Leroy Duncan answers with a big combination. Another good counter from Jared Cannonier connects flush. A spinning elbow from ‘CLD' rings the bell of ‘Tha Killa Gorilla'. Cannonier waves Duncan to come forward. He does and Jared forces the clinch and puts him against the cage. A clubbing elbow from Cannonier connects. He shoots in and scores with a takedown. He's now working from the half guard of Duncan and landing some short shots. ‘CLD' scrambles and somehow gets to the back of Cannonier. The horn ends an entertaining second round.

The third and final round of this middleweight battle begins and Christian Leroy Duncan lands a pair of kicks to get things started. He throws a third, but Cannonier blocks it. A clean combination lands for ‘CLD'. Now a crisp jab. Cannonier looks to close the distance, but his uppercut attempt falls short. Cannonier forces a body lock and then drags Duncan to the ground, but only for a moment. ‘CLD' quickly scrambles back up and gets back to range. He lands a low kick. Jared Cannonier forces the clinch and pushes the Brit back up against the cage. ‘Tha Killa Gorilla' with a knee to the body. Cannonier likely needs a finish. He has just over two minutes to make it happen. He scores a trip takedown and then another as ‘CLD' refuses to stay put. Jared with some knees to the thighs. Christian Leroy Duncan breaks free to range and then just misses with a high kick. He lands a big knee. A spinning elbow just misses. Both men look tired. They spill to the ground after a hard fought fifteen minutes.

Conor Benn doesn't have the same beef with Ryan Garcia he had with Chris Eubank Jr., but the two aren't exactly friends, either.

Earlier this week, Zuffa Boxing announced that Benn will challenge Garcia for his WBC lightweight belt on Sept. 12 in Las Vegas. It's Benn's first opportunity to fight for a world championship, and things have already gotten heated between the two, with the pair nearly coming to blows at their first press conference. But despite the intensity, Benn says this rivalry is nothing compared to his feud with Chris Eubank Jr.

“A lot less personal,†Benn told MMA Fighting when asked about his feelings on the fight. “A lot less spite involved. I think Ryan is what Ryan is. With Eubank, it was a lot more personal. There was family feud. There was generational family feud. It was the bragging rights of the family name. So, there was a lot more on the line. Whereas this one's more — I don't want to lie. I don't want to hurt the kid. It's a different feeling. I don't want to hurt him. I don't want to put him in the hospital. I want to have a good fight and beat him.â€

But just because he doesn't want to hurt Garcia, that doesn't mean he likes him.

“You've got to remember, he wasn't calling me out before the Eubank fights,†Benn said. “He wasn't calling me out after the Eubank fights. As soon as the Regis [Prograise] fight was done, ‘Cool, let me call him out. Let's have the fight now.' It just goes to show who he is at heart. He ain't taking this fight for legacy. He ain't taking this fight for anything other than trying to pick an easy fight in terms of — just pick an easy fight.

“The WBC made me mandatory for this fight. I'd like to see him go up to middleweight.â€

That animosity certainly came to the forefront for their first faceoff as the two boxers had to be separated by Dana White. And Benn says if things had gotten physical, he was ready for it.

“Oh, I wanted to punch his head in, for sure,†Benn said about the faceoff. “I wanted to punch his head in. I would have had it there and then with him. I'm not worried about nothing with Ryan. I ain't scared about nothing. What's there to be scared about? He's a spoiled brat and he carries on like a little child, throwing his toys out the pram, having social media tantrums. You think I'm worried about him? I've just gone up to middleweight and had Fight of the Year. You think I'm worried about Ryan, a lightweight? Not at all.â€

“Update: It was ACL and meniscus. It is the same injury as the first Holloway fight, only this time the opposite leg. Quite shocking. I returned to competition within 9 months to fight Diego Brandao back then. With today's regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods it is well within my realm to return by next summer. I am walking without a crutch. I done leg extension machine work the other day to no issue. So I can walk without aid, and activate my quad under resistance. All very positive. I am maximum discipline and have maintained it fully since the bout. I wonder was I saved from something worse here. I believe so. I would have attended the after party as “the man†and who knows then. I believe I was saved.

Alexandre Pantoja gives update on return: ‘I have unfinished business with Joshua Van’

Alexandre Pantoja is all healed up and ready to settle the score with Joshua Van.

In December, Pantoja defended his flyweight title against Van in the co-main event of UFC 323, but was beset by disaster when he injured his arm trying to roll away after Van caught a kick just seconds into the bout. Since then, Pantoja has been out of action while he recovers, while Van successfully defended his new title in May with a fifth-round stoppage over Tatsuro Taira at UFC 328.

But now, Pantoja is fit and ready to get back to it.

“I'm ready,†Pantoja told MMA Fighting. “After December, what happened to my arm, two days after that, I went to the gym, started training with just one arm. That's who I am. I'm not done. I'm not done. I have so much to conquer. I have so much to prove. And when you have the belt, your words [mean more]. I want to take the belt again. I want to be UFC champion one more time and keep talking to good things, about the world and things I saw in my life, make people happy. That's what I want.â€

As mentioned, while Pantoja's been out, Van has already added a title defense to his résumé, and other flyweight contenders have been busy as well, with Manel Kape knocking out Kyoji Horiguchi, and Brandon Royval psetting Lone'er Kavanagh. For Pantoja, the continued growth of the division in his absence has been great for him, too.

“Real good fight. Real good fight,†Pantoja said of Van's win over Taira. “Showed a lot of high-level skills. Don't get me wrong, on the same night, you have the Chimaev and Strickland fight, you see the difference about the pace, about the high-level. That's good to prove to everybody the flyweight division is one of the more entertaining divisions in the UFC.

“You see Manel Kape with Kyoji Horiguchi. You see Brandon Royval, all these guys put on very good show to everybody, and I think right now, flyweight is better than ever. I think what happened with me last year made the division more fire. Now I have the opportunity to take over and [beat] everybody again.â€

Pantoja was particularly impressed by Kape's win over Horiguchi at UFC Vegas 119 last month. After the win, Kape lobbied for his shot at the flyweight title, but Pantoja says he's up first. Then he and Kape can run things back.

“Beautiful performance,†Pantoja said. “I think Kyoji Horiguchi gets very close to winning the fight, but Manel is the real deal. Manel Kape, for me, is one of the most dangerous fights in the world in flyweight. He's the next contender.

“Of course, I have unfinished business with Joshua Van. Like, as an athlete, I know I lost the fight. That happened. But like a man, I don't think he beat me. I'm still here. I'm ready to fight. I'm in amazing shape. Let's see what happens next.â€
