UFC star Sean O'Malley has big hopes for a potential rematch between himself and UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan.
A few years back, Sean O'Malley defeated Petr Yan in a really close fight that was decided via split decision. Now, in the present day, Sean is campaigning for a crack at the world title he once held, which is now being carried by Yan after he defeated Merab Dvalishvili to win it for the second time.
RELATED: Sean O'Malley remains confident that he can beat Merab Dvalishvili despite two losses: “That's definitely on my radarâ€
O'Malley feels like a logical first contender for Yan given the run he's been on as of late, but in equal measure, Dvalishvili had a great run as champion, and it would make all the sense in the world for him to get his own rematch.
In a recent interview, O'Malley spoke openly about the current state of the title picture at 135 pounds.
O'Malley is ready for Yan showdown
“I've been hearing Petr and Merab are going to fight for a long time – still nothing booked,†O'Malley said on the “Pound 4 Pound†podcast. “I don't know if it's Merab's nose or Petr's back. It sucks. One of those guys is obviously holding it up, and I don't think it's Merab. I think Merab would fight with his arm cut off. So I think Petr is probably just dealing with some injuries.
“He's the champ, and if he's going to come back (against) Merab – I fought Merab knowing I was getting surgery after with a torn labrum. Still, it was a close fight, and then I get the surgery and fight Merab again seven months later, just wanting to be back, just wanting the belt back.
“You can't fight Merab on half-assed camps. You need a full, full camp. You need to be fully healthy to fight Merab, and Petr probably knows that. So he's taking his time, as he should. He is the champ. You don't want to go out there and lose the belt because you did something you shouldn't do, so I get it. But also, if they want me vs. Petr next, I do think me vs. Petr Yan 2, rematch, is the biggest fight in bantamweight history. I think it's the biggest one you could possibly make right now, and the UFC would be risking (it) making Merab vs. Petr.â€

Anthony
Smith is set to return to competition amidst his legal
troubles.
Smith is set to fight Jordan
Heiderman in the main event of
Gamebred Bare-Knuckle MMA 12 on Oct. 2 in the Dominican
Republic. The former
Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight was arrested
in Sarpy County, Nebraska, in July following an alleged altercation
with his wife. Smith is currently out on bail and faces four felony
charges.
Gamebred FC explains decision to book Anthony Smith against
Jordan Heiderman
Smith's wife came out in his support soon after the arrest.
Meanwhile, the former UFC title challenger recently issued a
statement, promising to tell his version of the story soon.
Gamebred FC also released a statement, explaining their stance.
While Gamebred FC isn't undermining the charges against Smith, they
consider him innocent until proven otherwise. Gamebred FC also
wants to allow Smith to continue to earn while he deals with his
legal issues.
“As we announce Anthony Smith's return to the Gamebred FC cage, I
want to speak directly about where our organization stands,â€
Gamebred FC president and COO Lex McMahon
wrote in the statement. “Anthony is facing serious allegations, and
like every person in this country, he is entitled to due process
and the presumption of innocence while his case moves through the
courts. He has pleaded not guilty and that process deserves to play
out fully and fairly on its own timeline, without a promotion, a
headline, or public opinion getting ahead of the facts. Anthony
also has a family to provide for and competing is how he does that.
Taking away his ability to earn a living before he has had his day
in court is not something Gamebred FC is willing to do to him or to
the people who depend on him. Jorge and I have known Anthony and
his family for years. What we have seen, up close and over time, is
a loving, devoted husband and father — nothing else. That doesn't
mean we are closing our eyes to what has been reported. It means
that we also know there is more to this story than has made it into
the headlines. And we believe Anthony deserves the chance to tell
it fully, in the appropriate setting, not through speculation. Our
support for Anthony going forward is not a statement on the
specifics of the case — those will be decided by the court, as they
should be. It is a statement about fairness, about due process, and
about standing by someone we know until we are given real reason
not to. We will have no further comment on the legal proceedings
and ask that Anthony and his family's privacy be respected as this
continues.â€
Smith (39-22) exited the UFC following a loss to Mingyang
Zhang last year. “Lionheart†has since knocked out Chase
Sherman in his bare-knuckle MMA debut at Gamebred FC this past

Gregory
Rodrigues sees openings he can exploit against Dricus Du
Plessis.
Rodrigues called out du Plessis after his recent victory over
Anthony
Hernandez, which extended his win streak to four straight. The
Brazilian views the former
Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion as the
“most logical matchup†for his next bout.
Gregory Rodrigues explains why Dricus Du Plessis is the matchup
he wants next
With Khamzat
Chimaev's future uncertain, and Brendan
Allen and Joe Pyfer
already booked, Rodrigues claims the time is right for the du
Plessis matchup.
“That's the fight that makes the most sense,†Rodrigues told
Sherdog. “I don't know what's going on with Chimaev and I think
Brendan Allen and Pyfer already have fights booked, so DDP seems
like the most logical matchup.â€
Rodrigues remains open to other matchups but is confident he can
beat du Plessis, eyeing holes in the South African's game.
“Dricus is very strong and tough and he beat the current champion,
but he makes a lot of technical mistakes that I can capitalize on,â€
Rodrigues added.
Despite having two wins over the current champ Sean
Strickland, du Plessis seemingly isn't atop the pecking order
of challengers at 185 pounds. In his last outing, “Stillknocksâ€
beat former welterweight champ Kamaru
Usman in a lopsided decision.
Khamzat
Chimaev and Gilbert
Burns are set to collide once again, this time on the wrestling
mat at Real American Freestyle.
The former
Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder and the
former welterweight title challenger will meet at RAF 13 on Sept.
18 at Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida. The pair previously
faced off at
UFC 273, where Chimaev edged Burns via decision.
Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns will meet at RAF 13 four
years after their UFC 273 classic
The RAF matchup comes over four years after Chimaev and Burns
squared off in one of UFC’s most memorable bouts of 2022, which
earned Fight of the Night honors.
Chimaev already has another RAF assignment locked in before the
Burns match. “Borz†is scheduled to face former UFC champion
Tyron
Woodley in the main event of RAF Moscow on Sept. 5. He made his
RAF debut earlier this year against Dillon
Danis.
Meanwhile, Burns announced his retirement from mixed martial arts
following a loss to Mike Malott
in April. The defeat was his fifth straight. Since stepping away
from MMA, Burns has turned his attention to management and has also
competed in UFC BJJ. The upcoming match with Chimaev marks the
Brazilian's debut in RAF.
