According to Mayweather, the rematch between boxing legends Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is apparently gaining momentum.
Mayweather was scheduled to end his nearly decade-long retirement against Pacquiao on September 19 at The Sphere in a rematch of their blockbuster 2015 fight. However, during Saturday’s meeting at the MCM store at Caesar’s Palace, Mayweather expressed doubts about the upcoming fight, telling Vegas Sports Today that it would actually be an exhibition and may not take place at The Sphere.
“Right now, we don’t know exactly where this fight is going to be,” Mayweather said. “We don’t know the location of the fight. The Sphere is one of the places they talked about. So we don’t know 100 percent if it will take place there. And it’s not actually a fight, it’s an exhibition.”
Mayweather’s remarks contradicted Netflix’s announcement of a rematch in February, as well as Mayweather’s press release that stated he would resume his boxing career and signed a multi-fight partnership with CSI Sports/Fight Sports.
Pacquiao’s team previously told ESPN he would only face Mayweather in a sanctioned professional fight. Pacquiao recently came out of retirement last summer when he fought Mario Barrios and ended in a majority draw.
Mayweather, 49, also told Vegas Sports today that he still plans to have an exhibition fight with Mike Tyson, which was announced last year but still has no official date or location. It is also unknown how the fight will be broadcast.
Adding to the confusion is the fact that Mayweather has announced another exhibition with Greek kickboxer Mike Zambidis for June in Athens, Greece, which also has no exact date, location or broadcast location.
Still, it seemed that coming out of retirement and rematching Pacquiao was a certainty. Now it appears that the future of Mayweather’s boxing career is as uncertain as ever.
“It’s an exhibition, so we’re both winners,” Mayweather said, hyping his rematch with Pacquiao, which was not a professional fight. “I mean, we just want to go out and entertain people and put on a good show.”
