Matchroom CEO provides an update on Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua
Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have been on a collision course to finally fight each other for over a decade, but the fight has yet to materialize.
Joshua’s promoter and Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith confirmed he still believes a fight between the pair is possible.
Following Fury’s recent announcement of his return to boxing and the revelation of his fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov, talks have once again turned to potential heavyweight clashes.
He will return on April 11 against the Russian, and the venue is not yet known.
One name that the “Gypsy King” has considered as a potential opponent is WBO world champion Fabio Wardley, who has also admitted to being interested in the fight.
Despite rumors of a fight between the two, Smith told talkSPORT he believed a commercial draw between ‘AJ’ and Fury would be too significant to risk.
“I don’t think he will fight Fabio Wardley.
“I don’t think it’s a gigantic enough risk commercially if the fight with AJ happens.”
Joshua’s return to the sport remains unconfirmed, although promoter Eddie Hearn has stated that he believes the two-time world champion will return.
On January 31, “AJ” published an emotional update in which he referred to his thoughts after the tragic events that took place in Nigeria.
He spoke about his motivations for carrying on the legacy of his two friends, “Latz” and “Sina”, in every possible way.
“I know what I feel, I know what my duty is.
“The mission must continue.
“I understand my duty and I understand what they wanted to do for their families.
“My goal is to continue to aid them achieve their goals.”
TalkSPORT’s Spencer Oliver said he believes a fight with Fury could still happen, even at this stage in both fighters’ careers.
“We now know that after this emotional statement made by Anthony Joshua, Anthony Joshua said that there is still an appetite for boxing and he will return to boxing.
“So that fight is still happening. I think we’ll see Fury vs. Joshua at this overdue stage in their careers.
“I think that will be fight number three. I think Fury’s game plan now will be Makhmudov. I think he will then target WBO champion Fabio Wardley and then try to win the world title there.”
“It’s Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua, the fight we always wanted. And if there’s a world title on the line, if he goes and wins that title, it’ll make him even more engaging to watch.”
“It’s a fight we’ve been talking about for five or six years, and yet we haven’t crossed the line.”

Jaron Ennis is the bookmakers’ main favorite to defeat Xander Zayas in their highly anticipated world title clash on Saturday in Brooklyn.
Ennis challenges Zayas for the WBO and WBA super welterweight belts at the Barclays Center live on DAZN pay-per-view.
The undefeated resident of Philadelphia enters the game as the favorite on February 11 Bet365 give the 23-year-old his first professional defeat and become world champion in two weight categories.

On Wednesday, Lewis Crocker heads to Australia to defend his IBF welterweight world title against Liam Paro for the first time.
Crocker will face Paro at the Pat Rafter Arena in Queensland, live on DAZN in the UK and Kayo Sports in Australia.
Crocker (22-0, 11 KO) became world champion in September, defeating Paddy Donovan twice before winning the rematch by split decision.
Man from Belfast recorded his second victory over Donovan after the first victory in March last year, and his rival was disqualified for hitting him after the bell.
Paro (27-1, 16 KO) is trying to become a world champion in two weight categories, having previously reigned in the super-lightweight division.
The 30-year-old won the title with a unanimous decision victory over Subriel Matias in Puerto Rico before winning the belt in his first defense against Richardson Hitchins.
The Australian has since won twice, overtaking David Papot in his last appearance in September.
McKean meets Taliva
Heavyweight Demsey McKean will look to continue his rebuild when he faces Liam Talivaa for the vacant IBF Pan Pacific title.
