Russell says he has trained with Stevenson in the past and studied his game, paying attention to what he struggles with. He saw that he felt comfortable taking charge, “dictating the action.” Shakur is learning to fight in the pocket, but is still not comfortable with the pressure, especially with combination strikes.
In Shakur’s last fight against William Zepeda, he looked vulnerable as he was hit with threes and fours from the Mexican boxer at high volume. He fought better when Zepeda only landed one punch at a time.
If he’s in shape and his game plan covers the first five or six rounds, “Every time I close the gap, I touch it in threes and fours”that will put Shakur on the defensive,” Gary Russell said MillCity Boxing on how Teofimo Lopez can beat Shakur Stevenson.
The problem for Teofimo may be that Shakur will play like he did in the match against Edwin De Los Santos. If he fights like this, staying on the bike for 12 rounds, Teo will have a demanding time landing punches. He’ll have to pressure Stevenson, as he did against Jamaine Ortiz and Lomachenko, to come to terms.
“Shakur is trying to get a little more comfortable fighting in the pocket, but he’s more of a boxer. He likes to dictate the action. When you bring that shit to him and give him something to think about, now you’ve achieved your goal,” Russell said.
Stevenson never looked comfortable fighting in the pocket against Zepeda. He received shots to his body throughout the night and took enough blows to his head to make his cheeks swell and his mouth bloody. He took more punishment than Zepeda, who dealt nearly 1,000 blows. Many of them had to do with the body.
“I don’t think he has to hurt Shakur to win the fight. He just has to show a certain level of aggression and his approach has to be direct,” Russell said.
Lopez needs to apply pressure, throw combinations and not let Stevenson move without a fight. The punches Teofimo throws must be aimed at the head, as he may be underestimated if he mainly punches to the body.
“Get within range, and as soon as you get in range, slide, boom, boom, boom – every time – two, three, four, boom, boom, boom. Poke him. Stick the stick into him and keep getting closer. That’ll make Shakur look indecisive,” Russell said.
When De Los Santos closed the gap, Shakur always ran away. In one case he jumped to escape. The photo became a meme because it looked so bad. He wanted nothing to do with standing in the pocket against De Los Santos.
Lopez will have to cut the ring and operate his quick feet to stay with Stevenson as he has already said that after the Zepeda fight he will no longer fight in the pocket because he was hit too demanding.
