Last month, the boxing world was shocked when it emerged that Joseph Parker had tested positive for cocaine on the day of his key heavyweight clash with Fabio Wardley.
The Novel Zealander met Wardley at London’s O2 Arena and the world title was at stake. In a thrilling fight, both men traded power shots, but it was Wardley who emerged victorious after an 11th-round stoppage.
Weeks later, it was reported that Parker failed a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) test for cocaine, a substance that does not enhance performance. Despite this, the former WBO heavyweight champion could still face disciplinary action from the British Boxing Board of Control, which handed Liam Cameron a four-year ban in 2018 after testing positive for the same drug.
After this information was released, Parker initially released a statement.
“Before my last fight, I voluntarily took a test and now I have been informed that the result was negative. It was a real surprise for me.
“I have not used any prohibited substances, I do not exploit performance-enhancing drugs and I do not support their exploit.
“I am fully cooperating with the ongoing lawsuit and I am confident that the investigation will clear my name.”
Parker hoped that a victory over Wardley would give him a shot at then undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk. Usyk instead chose to relinquish his WBO title rather than defend against Wardley, which elevated the Briton from interim belt holder to full world champion.
In a fresh interview with Boxing King’s MediaParker provided an update on the situation.
“We’re going through a process and everything will come out soon and all I can say is that I didn’t do anything wrong. I didn’t do anything wrong in the camp, nothing wrong before the fight and that will come out soon. I’m ready to go out again as soon as my name is cleared – – lock me up for another fight as soon as possible.
Parker was reminded that even if he is cleared, some may still doubt him. The 33-year-old replied.
“Now I realize why I should care what other people think? There will always be people who support you, there will always be people who hate you and want to see you fail. I don’t care. I live a good life. I am very blessed.”
