Devin Haney revealed the conditions under which he would give Conor Benn an immediate shot at the world title.
The 27-year-old won the WBO welterweight belt last monthdelivering a clinical performance that will blow away, overtake and ultimately dethrone Brian Norman Jr.
In doing so, Haney not only became a three-division world champion, but also silenced many of his critics, most of whom expressed the view that he was a sinking fighter.
This was largely due to his majority decision loss to Ryan Garcia, where he was knocked to the ground three times in April 2024, although the result was ultimately overturned after “King Ry” tested positive for the banned substance ostarine.
After that loss, the safety-first approach of Jose Ramirez, whom he eventually passed in May, did little to convince fans that Haney was back to his venerable self.
But now that Haney is widely considered the top dog at 147 pounds, the skillful technician has suddenly become a valuable commodity in his division.
Among those who have expressed interest in fighting the WBO champion is Benn, who is coming off a dominant unanimous decision victory over Chris Eubank Jr.
Despite competing at middleweight in the rematch and despite their first meeting in April, “The Destroyer” confirmed his intention to return to welterweight.
But while Benn and Haney have exchanged information on social media, the American world champion apparently has no interest in voluntarily defending his title against the Briton unless one condition is met.
In an interview with Boxing King’s MediaHaney insists they will only fight if Hearn, Benn’s promoter, is willing to offer a significant sum of money.
“Conor Benn has nothing to gain for me now. He’s not a huge attraction in America, he doesn’t have the belt.
“[But] if Eddie [Hearn] wants to throw a lot of money at me to fight this fight, then it would make sense to me.”
Since then, in addition to Haney, Benn has been given another world title shot after being announced as mandatory challenger for the WBC belt, meaning he is set to face the winner of the fight between Mario Barrios and Ryan Garcia.
