By veteran fight analyst Chris Williams – Colossus Boxing: Junior middleweight champions Abass Baraou (17-1, 9 KO) and Xander Zayas will fight in a unification fight on January 31 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This is the homecoming fight that newly crowned WBO 154-pound champion Zayas (22-0, 13 KO) has been talking about.
The weakest champion takes his easiest shot
This is the best possible result for 23-year-old, Top Ranked Zayas, who is perceived as the weakest link among the 154-year-old champions. However, in the case of Puerto Rican Xander, this is not certain. WBA junior middleweight champion Baraou, 31, is snail-paced, methodical and a runner like Zayas can outsmart him.
Coppinger reveals details of the fight
Mike Coppinger broke the story at X on Thursday. This will be a straight fight to unify the two belts, giving Zayas a chance to become a star in the Up-to-date York area, but probably not elsewhere in the U.S.
Xander won the vacant WBO 154-pound title on July 26, 2025, defeating Jorge Garcia Perez via 12-round unanimous decision on July 26, 2025, at Madison Square Garden in Up-to-date York. The scores were 116-112, 118-11.0 and 119-109.
As in most of his fights, Zayas held and moved a lot. The crowd in Up-to-date York was unusually still and didn’t find much to cheer because there was so little action. There are no words to describe how monotonous Xander’s fight was, but that’s how he fights.
If Zayas stands and fights, Abass will probably win this fight because he is tougher, punches harder, and has a lovely combo when he lets his hands go. He has better physical tools for the job than Xander. What may unsettle Baraou is the movement and holding he will have to deal with in this fight.
If Zayas holds up, Baraou must break through
If Baraou overcomes the constant clenching that Zayas is doing by still punching him with his free hand, he will win because his punches have more pop. Overall, he’s a tougher fighter than Xander in this matchup. The fight will take place in Puerto Rico, making it hard for Abass to win without knocking out Zayas.
