David Benavidez has experience sharing the ring with many world-class fighters, both in the gym and on the world stage.
“The Mexican Monster” sparred with the likes of Gennady Golovkin and Kelly Pavlik as a 15-year-old, and just over a decade later, he is one of the best 175-pound fighters in the world.
One potential fight that has been touted is between Benavidez and Dmitry Bivol, which could bring back painful memories for the Russian.
Both light heavyweights currently hold all four world titles – Benavidez is the WBC champion, and Bivol is the holder of the WBA, IBF and WBO belts.
Currently, Benavidez (30-0 (24 KO)) is preparing to defend his title against Briton Anthony Yarde, while Bivol continues his rehabilitation from spine surgery in August. The injury is expected to keep the former undisputed champion out of the ring until 2026.
Benavidez’s win on Nov. 22 in Riyad could raise calls for another undisputed showdown at 175 pounds. In an interview with Boxing News, Benavidez summarized his sparring sessions with Bivol.
“I sparred with Bivol many times. I remember he was a good fighter. The last time I sparred with him, I hurt him badly in the fourth round. He’s a great fighter. I’m not taking anything away from him. The last time I sparred with him, I was 22. That was about six years ago. But I remember there are some opportunities I could take advantage of.”
Another key figure in the lithe heavyweight division is Artur Beterbiev, a risky Russian who drew 1-1 with Bivol after two memorable fights. A trilogy between the pair is planned for 2026.
Benavidez was asked who he would prefer to face if the titles were not at stake – Bivol or Beterbiev.
“I think a fight with Beterbiev would be more fan-friendly. It would be more hard. Beterbiev is a more tough, direct type of fighter. Bivol is more of a fighter that you have to go and hunt down.” [fighter]. I’m ready to fight anyone. I think a more fan-friendly fight would be between me and Beterbiev – that would be a great fight. But even me and Bivol, it would be a great fight too.”
For now, Benavidez is focusing on Yarde later this month, and the event also features Brian Norman defending his WBO welterweight title against Devin Haney.
