Derek Chisora is in negotiations to fight Jarrell Miller on December 13 at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, England.
Will Delboy ever retire?
Miller (26-1-2, 22 KO) would be a protected choice for Chisora. Any better player would be a nightmare for Delboy. The 37-year-old American Miller (26-1-2, 22 KO) has been going through a long break since he won a 12-round majority draw with Andy Ruiz on August 3, 2024.
This will be 41-year-old Chisora’s 50th fight in his 18-year professional career. It is impossible to say for sure whether Chisora will retire because if he is offered a good salary, he will definitely come back.
Zhang was too risky
Zhilei Zhang was considered as an option for Chisora. It would be risky for Derek as he faces his farewell fight. The 42-year-old Zhang can punch, and Chisora is not the hardest player to hit. By the time Zhilei gasses herself, there may be little left of Chisora’s face.
Derek’s last opponent, Otto Wallin, left him looking battered during his fight earlier this year on February 8. Wallin is not a puncher, but he did a lot of damage to Chisora, losing a 12-round unanimous decision.
This fight showed that Chisora can lose even to fighters who lack power. Anthony Joshua knocked out Wallin in five rounds in 2023. Using Miller as an opponent may be Chisora’s mistake, but it may not matter considering this may be his last fight.
His PED past still haunts him
British fans know Miller and will tolerate him as Chisora’s opponent. There wouldn’t be much interest in the U.S. because Jarrell burned bridges with many boxing fans for testing positive for PEDs in 2019, which scuttled his fight with Anthony Joshua in Modern York.
Chisora will share the December 13 card with heavyweight contender Moses Itauma. With them on the same card, it will likely take place on DAZN PPV, similar to Itauma’s last fight against Dillian Whyte.
If they put this card on pay-per-view, the fans will howl. Itauma has only defeated tomato cans in his career. Chisora is just an ancient journeyman who hasn’t had any notable wins in his long career.
Itauma’s potential opponents
- David Adeley
- Michael Hunter
- Zhilei Zhang
Interestingly, Itauma chose not to fight Frank Sanchez in an IBF title eliminator that would have set him up as a must-see for champion Oleksandr Usyk.
