Danny Garcia rolled back the years in spectacular fashion with a one-punch knockout that stunned Brooklyn and reignited calls for another world title fight.
In what was billed as his final appearance on Barclays CentreGarcia (38-4, 22 KO) stopped Queens native Danny “El Gallo” Gonzalez (22-5-1, 7 KO) with a perfect left hook in the fourth round of the Swift Promotions main event.
Vintage Swift: Danny Garcia’s farewell to Brooklyn ends in style
Garcia, a two-division world champion and one of the greatest fighters to ever appear at Barclays, dominated early in the fight with keen, high-powered shots before timing Gonzalez perfectly midway through the fight. Gonzalez was unable to recover from the weighty impact on the canvas and had difficulty getting up on subsequent attempts to get up. The official break came just 45 seconds into the fourth round.
“I knew when he stopped his legs I was going to catch him,” Garcia said after the fight. “I didn’t underestimate him, but I knew my moment would come. A champion doesn’t come back halfway.”
It was a decisive victory that showcased the precision of the classic “Swift” — the same left hook that defined Garcia’s growth to 140 and 147 pounds. The performance immediately fueled fan speculation about whether the Philadelphia native would be able to claim another world crown one last time.
Garcia left the door open.
“I’m content. I’ve done a lot in my career and this is a great way to end it, but I don’t know if I’m done yet.”
