Jaime Munguia targets Christian Mballi and Hamzah Sheraz for his next fight in spring 2026 in the US
Mbilli seen as favorite
According to reports, the most likely of the two for Munguia is WBC 168-pound interim champion Mbilli (29-0-1, 23 KOs).
Route towards Crawford lanes
A victory over Mbilli would give Jaime a chance to fight undisputed champion Terence Crawford for his four belts. Even if Crawford ignores Munguia, he will eventually get a shot at the WBC belt when it becomes vacant.
It’s questionable whether Bud will defend against Munguia as it’s not a fight that would earn him a massive payday. He got a taste of massive money after his victory over Canelo Alvarez and will be selective when choosing his next opponent.
Munguia would be unsafe for Crawford because he can punch, has a sturdy chin and would unload raw power that the 38-year-old could struggle with.
Sheeraz still in the photo
Munguia “has two options” for his next fight by Salvador Sanchez at ESPN Knockout.
Former WBO junior middleweight champion Munguia (45-2, 35 KO) scored a 12-round unanimous decision victory over Bruno Surace in a rematch that took place earlier this year on May 3. He avenged his defeat by knockout in the sixth round
Lester Martinez Contingency Plan
Munguia’s backup option if he fails to land Mbilli or Sheeraz is Lester Martinez, a 168-pound contender. On September 12, he will draw with Mbilli after 12 rounds during the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford gala.
30-year-old Mbilli is already able to challenge Crawford for the belts, but he will not be taken seriously either. He’s too talented for his own game and has a lot of the same offensive weapons that Munguia would utilize against Terence. These are real super middleweights, not bloated ones.
Mbilli vs. Munguia would be a very stimulating match, similar to Mbilli vs. Lester Martinez. The difference is that Munguia would not utilize the same pushing strategy as Lester to neutralize Mbilli’s attack.
Martinez was quite brazen in calling Christian names, and he got away with murder thanks to referee Allen Huggins’ laissez-faire and hands-off approach to foul control. Munguia wouldn’t choose to cheat. He will fight Mbilli and it will all depend on who is stronger.
