Erickson Lubin says he noticed that Vergil Ortiz Jr. he tends to get “emotional” during fights when he gets hit. He comes immediately, throws “crazy” shots, trying to get them back.
He might catch up with Vergil Jr next month. (23-0, 21 KO), who will defend his interim WBC junior middleweight title against boxer Lubin (27-2, 19 KO) on November 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The event will be broadcast on DAZN.
Wild answer
“A more brutal way of thinking. I feel like Vergil gets a little emotional when he’s fighting. You throw a few punches at him and he starts shaking his head and biting his lip,” said Erickson Lubin MillCity Boxing about how Vergil Ortiz Jr. becomes emotional after being hit.
Ortiz Jr., 27, has no intention of changing his boxing DNA at this point in his career, remaining tranquil and keeping his head down after a demanding pin. He will always fight like a wild man. If he doesn’t catch up in the Erickson fight, there’s a good chance it will happen in the Jaron “Boots” Ennis fight.
“I want it back. He starts throwing some crazy nonsense at you. They should make that title fight and let Fundora become the champion during the break,” Erickson said, reacting to WBC junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora postponing his fight with Keith Thurman due to a hand injury.
Vergil Jr. he has always struggled with his emotions throughout his career and so far he has succeeded. This also caused him to take a lot of punishment by rushing straight at his opponents. We saw this in his fights against Serhiy Bohachuk and Israil Madrimov. Ortiz Jr. he looked like he had stepped out of a war zone at the end of the fight.
Question about the WBC title
It would make sense for the WBC to put the 154-pound title on the line for Vergil vs. Lupine. However, the sanctioning body should put it on the line for the Fundora-Thurman fight as it involves Amazon Prime Video PPV. It’s a bigger fight. The WBC would be shooting itself in the foot by giving Fundora the title on hiatus.
“I’m leaning towards Fundora. No offense to Keith, but a bit of inaction. A little older now,” Lubin said.
If you take a closer look at Thurman’s last fight, after another three-year break against Australian Brock Jarvis on March 12, you’ll notice he’s not the same fighter.
All he had to do was move and fire a scarce single shot. His punching power has dropped to almost zero and he doesn’t seem capable of standing still during a shootout. This approach will not work against Fundora.
