Promoter Eddie Hearn still hopes to stage a fight between former British kingpins Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in 2026.
America proved itself many years ago
While some British fans are still looking forward to this tired matchup, the American public is disheartened by both fighters and sees them as overly wealthy and symbolizing artificially manufactured fighters who were never as good as the market made them believe.
Interest in the Fury-Joshua fight has long since waned for many. It’s past the rotten stage, as the match has been talked about for over 10 years. Neither of them wanted to fight when it really mattered, when they were still in their 20s. The way both of them have looked over the last three years, I think it’s terrible that this match will happen now.
Why should we even care?
This competition would have mattered five years ago when they were still at the top of their games, but at this point neither of them are anywhere near the top level. Fury (34-2-1, 24 KO) has lost his last two fights and looks aged for 37 years.
At this point, Joshua and Fury were both inactive, both suffering devastating losses. I’m not sure which one it was
They are each worth over $100 million, and if they fought, their bank accounts would grow by at least another $100 million.
Hearn’s costly four-fight rebuild of Joshua was a complete failure, as he was annihilated in his last fight, when he faced a halfway decent fighter in September 2024, Daniel Dubois.
Hearn’s Gold Pension Plan
Of course, Hearn is still interested in this fight. The question is whether Turki Alalshikh would be willing to pay the hefty price to host the Fury vs. Joshua fight. I don’t understand why he would do that. It’s a fight that would only resonate with the British boxing public, not the rest of the world. Americans don’t judge them and I’m not sure they ever did.
Fury’s best win is Klitschko, with the closest second best result being Deontay Wilder. What does this say about The Gypsy King’s Fury? He was never the real one.
“What AJ wants more than anything is to fight Tyson Fury,” said Eddie Hearn Heavenly sports.
“I think Turki Alalshikh is probably the only one who can fight Tyson Fury because they’re both going to want a huge amount of money. And the biggest fight in the sport is Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury,” Hearn told ESPN.
