Coach Stephen Edwards says that the chances of Erickson Lubin winning against Vergil Ortiz Jr. in 25 days on November 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas are substantial. The event will be broadcast on the DAZN platform.
Fighting in enemy territory
Edwards believes boxing politics make it tough for “The Hammer” Lubin (27-2, 19 KO) to win a decision when he is the B-side and fights “Mexican Texas” in Vergil Jr.
In addition, there are reports that Jaron “Boots” Ennis has signed a contract to fight Ortiz Jr. next spring. When you put it all together, Stephen says Erickson, 30, has to “He gave the performance of his life drag this fight out.” Even if that happens, he will have to face an excellent competitor and it may be too much for him.
Vergil’s battle-tested edge
Vergil Jr. (23-0, 21 KO) earned his fighting belts in his last two fights, defeating Israil Madrimov and Serhiy Bohachuk. These are players with whom Lubin would have a tough task.
“Everything in this fight is against Lubin. If he tries to knock out Ortiz, it’s going to be tough for him because if he punches, sometimes he’s really going to get hurt,” trainer Stephen Edwards told MillCity Boxing about what Erickson Lubin will be fighting against Vergil Ortiz Jr. November 8.
Lubin was stopped by Jermell Charlo in the first round in an ill-advised fight on October 14, 2017. He had just turned 22 at the time of the fight and was not in the same ring as Jermell.
In Lubin’s second defeat, he was severely beaten and on April 9, 2022, he was stopped by Sebastian Fundora in the ninth round. His face was so swollen that he was barely recognizable. This loss was not due to youth and inexperience. It was more about being out of her league against the 6’5 1/2″ Fundora. He wasn’t going to beat him tonight, at any age.
Lubin’s only path: perfection
“If he’s boxing, who knows if he’ll get recognition by winning a decision in Texas. Now when they talk about ‘Boots’ and Ortiz fighting, they’re talking about money,” Edwards said. “Lubin will have to give the performance of his life to win this fight.”
In the fight “Boots” Ennis vs. Ortiz Jr. there will be a lot of money at stake. It makes sense that Lubin would be very concerned about his chances of winning a decision considering the potential fight that would come next. The boxing world wants this fight and he is only seen as an obstacle.
“I’m talking about reality. I know how this game is played. Now that ‘Boots’ has supposedly signed a contract and he and Ortiz are scheduled for next spring,” Edwards said.
