WBC junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora reportedly suffered a left hand injury and his title defense against Keith “One Time” Thurman on October 25 had to be postponed.

Injury hits ‘great hell’

Fundora “The Towering Inferno” (23-1-1, 15 KO) is a southpaw, so the injury to his left hand affected him much more than if it had been his right.

The entire event, which includes a world title fight between WBC super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster and Stephen Fulton, will be postponed along with the Fundora-Thurman fight.

Mike Coppinger retweeted the disappointing news X Today. It’s a bit surprising that 27-year-old Fundora was injured and not Thurman, who has a long history of injury problems dating back to 2016.

Last year, Keith collapsed while preparing for his world title fight against then-WBO 154-pound champion Tim Tszyu on March 30, 2024. Fundora entered the field at the last minute and defeated Tszyu in a 12-round split decision.

$74.99 PPV: Too high-priced for a substitute

Wood’s answer: In connection with the sale of the event $74.99 on Amazon Prime Video pay-per-view, it makes sense to move it. For that kind of money, there would be no point in looking for a last-minute replacement to replace the future 37-year-old Thurman (31-1, 23 KO).

Moreover, the risk of Thurman’s failure would be high. Earlier this year, on March 12, he was injured in the first round of his last fight against second-string Brock Jarvis. This performance proved that it’s not worth the risk with the aging, rusty “One Time” ring.

Matching Thurman with almost any top-15 junior middleweight would be very risky. Better save him for Fundora. It would be a disaster if Keith was destroyed by one of the bottom-tier contenders brought in as a replacement to save the October 25 fight date.

Fan reaction: shrug and frustration

Interestingly, fans’ reactions on social media are mixed, with some showing disappointment and great indifference. The Fundora-Thurman fight didn’t create the spark that some people thought it would.

This is understandable, as Thurman has been too inactive since 2017 to maintain his popularity. Younger fans have never seen him before and are not excited about this matchup.

Many of them see Thurman as an ancient fossil from the age of dinosaurs, not a person from another era. Many of them don’t know who Keith is and see him as a guy who talks a lot about the ancient days in his YouTube interviews. He mentions a lot and younger fans can’t connect.

It is still too early to know whether the event will be rescheduled to the same venue at the MGM Grand, Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
