Shakur Stevenson is currently one of the most talented players in the sport, but in the eyes of world-class coach Robert Garcia, there is one American who he believes may be the man who will hand Newark the first defeat of his career.
Stevenson dominated Teofimo Lopez to become a four-division world champion in January and since then he has been linked to a slew of fights against some of boxing’s biggest names and a potential move up to the welterweight division.
However, while the newly crowned WBO super-lightweight world champion may be considered one of the most talented operators in the world of boxing, he currently lacks the star power to convince some of the sport’s superstars to fight.
As a result, despite the call-up of both Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn, it looks like the welterweight duo will face each other instead, with Stevenson having to consider whether he should stay at super lightweight, drop back down to lightweight, or start his campaign at 147 pounds.
Robert Garcia believes that if he decided to move up, current WBO welterweight world champion Devin Haney could defeat Stevenson due to his physical advantage as well as his boxing skills, he said. Boxing Scene.
“It’s not an straightforward fight for Shakur, that’s why he’s not chasing this fight. He knows it’s a perilous fight, especially if they do it at welterweight.
“I want it at catchweight, but if Haney is the welterweight champion, then fight him at welterweight. I don’t think Shakur is substantial enough like that [Floyd] Mayweather was at a certain point where he could have said, “I want you in this weight class.”
“If this fight happens, it will be at welterweight. Shakur may not want to do it because it will be very perilous for him to fight such a substantial guy. Haney can fight, Haney is rapid, Haney has decent strength too.
“I see Haney is the bigger man and maybe I would give Haney the advantage, but it’s an intriguing fight – a fight I’d like to see.”
Haney seemed destined to fight WBA champion Rolando Romero in a welterweight title unification until talks recently ended and a potential Garcia-Benn announcement seemed to have left “The Dream” in the lurch as he looks for his first fight in 2026.
