Another addition to the win column for Ernesto “Tito” Mercado tonight in the main event of Red Owl Boxing in Houston, Texas, where he scored a TKO-4 victory over Deiner Berrio.
Mercado (15-0, 14 KO) came to fight, but did most of his work against the equivalent of a ponderous bag on the legs. Berrio (22-5-1, 13 KO) spent the entire action in what could generously be called consistently on the defensive, rarely throwing anything at Mercado.
The comment was less generous and bluntly asked if Berrio’s approach had anything to do with how he trained for the fight. And if so, what exactly was he training for? If the strategy was to exhaust the younger fighter and take advantage of opportunities tardy in the fight, we never got there to see it. Mercado predicted the end of the third round, and Berrio retired on his stool after the end of the third round. The result was officially announced as TKO ten seconds after round 4.
Not much can be made from this given the lack of resistance Mercado faced. However, if you’re looking for encouraging signs, this was the first and only time Berrio was stopped compact of the distance. In his last fight, he won the full 10 rounds against Jose Valenzuela, another talented youthful fighter with good power.
What if you really want the silver lining? If Mercado washes himself aggressively with a sponge in the locker room shower, it could cause him more suffering than what he felt today after any of Berrio’s punches. Mercado already has 11 wins in less than two years, and nothing that happened tonight should affect another quick return to the ring.
Carlos Jackson TKO-5 Alexis Bastar
Weird things in the main support, where Carlos Jackson scored a TKO after multiple point deductions that seemed to come close to disqualification.
Jackson (20-1, 13 KO) lost two points in one round to low blows that were legitimate to some extent but were sold by a Razzie-worthy performance from Alexis Bastar. Bastar (18-3-1, 9 KO) tried to sell a clinch headlock with a football flop in the next round, but the referee awarded him a knockdown instead.
Bastar finished the round but was off his stool during the next one due to what color commentator Shawn Porter said was a hand injury.
Other results:
- Oscar Perez UD-6 Jeremiah Lewis-Watts (57-56, 58-55, 59-54)
- Adrian Serrano MD-4 Luis Gerardo (38-38, 39-37, 40-36)
