Nazarena Romero crowned in Buenos Aires – World Boxing Association

Published

on

The second KO Drugs Day took place on Saturday at the Casino de Buenos Aires, and one of the highlights was the announcement of local Nazarene “Capricho” Romero as the absolute World Boxing Association champion in the 122-pound weight class, defeating Mexican Pailette Valenzuela Cuesta by technical knockout.

It was a fight that was met with great applause from the full house at Saturday’s Adrenaline. Nazarena Romero, the girlfriend of “Capricho”, was the interim WBA super bantamweight champion in 2020, but because she became a mother for the third time, she was unable to defend the belt.

Then in June 2023 she drew in Buenos Aires with Venezuelan Mayerlin Rivas for the same belt, but absolute, and in May of this year she went to Mexico to face Erika Cruz, who until now had owned the crown after defeating Rivas in November 2023. There, Romero drew again.

However, as sport has its revenge, the girl born in the province of Catamarca, who grew up experiencing the blows of life that taught her to never give up, entered the ring of the Casino de Buenos Aires last Saturday with iron determination and surgical precision to decide the fight with the Mexican boxer by technical knockout in the tenth round and finally take the crown, ensuring absolute dominance in the WBA super bantamweight division.

The title remained vacant following Romero’s draw with Cruz because the Aztec fighter tested positive for doping.

The Romero-Valenzuela Cuesta fight was a thrilling one from start to finish. Cuesta was close to hitting the boards on more than one occasion, but her iron nature kept her on her feet until the final round, when the Argentine’s punishment overwhelmed her will and the referee had to intervene.

Romero remains undefeated with 14 wins and 2 draws, as well as the coveted coronation, and celebrated with tears of joy and a huge celebration of the effort that brought her to her goal.

Lauren Price will defend her World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight title on December 14 against Bexcy Mateus at the Exhibition Center in Liverpool, UK.

On Wednesday, the promoter made the official announcement of this fight, an evening during which several crucial fights will take place and several characters will be in the ring.

Price will make the first defense of her crown, which she won on May 11 last year, defeating Jessica McCaskill in the ninth round by technical decision. The fight had to be stopped due to her opponent being cut after an accidental headbutt and the Briton was on top by the end of the fight.

Mateus is Colombian and 29 years aged. She is undefeated and has a huge chance for a career that will not be basic, but she intends to take advantage of it. The fighter from Bogota will fight for the first time outside the country, which means a massive challenge, but she is supported by her striking power and aggressive style.

Price arrives with a record of 7 wins, no losses and 1 knockout, while Mateus has 7 wins, no losses and 6 knockouts.

World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion Eri Matsuda will face Tina Rupprecht in a triple crown unification fight this Saturday at the Olympiastuetzpunkt Stadium in Heidelberg, Germany.

Matsuda’s WBO belt and the IBF belt, owned by Rupprecht, will also be at stake in the fight. The winner will inevitably be the best in a division that has become increasingly competitive over the years.

It will be a hard challenge for the Japanese fighter, as it will be her first defense of the black and gold crown, as well as her first fight outside her home country, which is a challenge for any fighter’s career.

In her last fight, Matsuda, 30, defeated Yuko Kuroki to take the pioneering promotion’s 102-pound crown in a brilliant performance that shocked the boxing world.

She will now face Rupprecht, a long-time minimum delicate champion in the past who lost her world crown to Seniesa Estrada in 2023. After this defeat, she decided to move down to a lower category and was crowned by defeating Fabiana Bytyqi in January this year, so this fight will mark consolidation in this fresh category.
