Chris Billam-Smith vs Richard Riakporhe 2 won’t be the only solid cruiserweight fight at Selhurst Park on June 15, as Boxxer has announced Isaac Chamberlain will face Michał Cieślak
Chamberlain (16-2, 8 KO) won the British and Commonwealth belt in October last year by unanimous decision over undefeated Mikael Lawal. He refused to defend his British title against Cheavon Clarke in favor of vacating it earlier this month, and while I respect his willingness to fight for better equipment, waiting until the bid is outbid seems idiotic.
Ethics aside, he is a solid operator whose only professional losses came to Lawrence Okolie and the aforementioned Billam-Smith.
“We gave up the British title to rise to world level,” Chamberlain said. “I’m grateful that I got the chance to become European champion. This will show that I am world class and that I am destined to become world champion. The victory over Cieślak puts me in the top five of all governing bodies and one step away from fighting for the world title.
“Getting a chance at such a large event in the stadium makes it even sweeter. I’m sure south London will prove itself and Selhurst Park will be sparkling on June 15 when I’m crowned the modern European champion.
Pole Cieślak (26-2, 20 KO) lost in two world title bids, dropping a competitive decision to Ilunga Makabu in 2020 and the much uglier UD to Okolie two years later. That said, he has a good body attack and real power, as Tommy McCarthy found out last November.
Cieslak no. 2, and the WBO for Riakporhe, so whoever wins here could be in line for another title fight.
“My goal is to fight for the world championship again, but I am aware that defending the European champion title, especially against such a hazardous and highly rated player as Isaac Chamberlain, brings me closer to this goal,” said Cieślak. “For me, this is another step on the way to realizing my dreams. If I want to become world champion, I have to beat rivals like Chamberlain.
“My debut on British soil ended in defeat, so now I will have extra motivation to equalize. I’m maturing and making progress with each performance. My last fight ended quicker than I thought, so I’m hoping I’ll have the opportunity to have a little more time in the ring against Chamberlain.”
