KNOCKOUT! Dalton Smith tears apart Jose Zepeda with a body shot, more moments

Dalton Smith maintained his unbeaten record with a nasty fifth-round knockout victory over veteran Jose Zepeda, finishing the former world title challenger with a body shot in Sheffield, England.

Smith (16-0, 12 KOs) started off shaky, especially in the first round and then a bit in the second, but “snail-paced” starts are nothing novel for the 27-year-old hometown favorite, and once he started finding his rhythm and throwing punches, Zepeda (37-5, 28 KOs) started to look overmatched and one-dimensional.

The 34-year-old Mexican, who has lost two in a row and his last three fights against the right opponent, including two by stoppage, relied heavily on his left hand power from his southpaw stance, but Smith was starting to see more of that and Zepeda simply wasn’t mixing things up on the offensive end.

Smith began to land some earnest punches, but the body shot was essentially one punch and Zepeda didn’t count. That should pretty much put an end to Zepeda’s perception of being a legitimate contender at 140 pounds and give Smith a solid place in the belt as far as his career goes, another test passed, and another step up the ladder.

In the headliner, Sandy Ryan crushed Terri Harper pretty well to retain her WBO welterweight title, with Harper’s corner taking her out of the fight after four rounds that were far from promising.

Harper (14-2-2, 6 KOs) fell brief of earning a third-division world title with this loss, having done so previously at 130 and 154. Ryan (7-1-1, 3 KOs) simply crushed her, really, and Harper’s corner was right to stop the fight, and the fighter didn’t argue much.

“I respect her a lot and she knows that,” Ryan said after the fight. “I just started putting pressure on her and when I saw her weaken, I thought, ‘There’s no way I’m stepping on any knees here.’”

Jimmy Joe Flint denied Campbell Hatton his first shot at a regional title, retaining the BBBofC Central Area super lightweight title with a decision victory by scores of 97-95, 97-94, and 98-92.

Flint improves to 14-1-2 (3 KOs), while Hatton falls to 14-1 (5 KOs) after his first professional defeat.

“I salute Campbell. Listen, he’ll come back, no doubt about it,” Flint said. “A great fighter, a newborn kid, he’ll come back, and I’ll bet my life on that. Experience (won the fight).”

“I came on strongly in the second half and showed my experience,” Hatton said. “I thought I did enough, but no arguments from me, fair play to him. We’re just learning, aren’t we?”

“Ryan has voluntarily submitted to tests throughout his career, with consistently negative results. He tested negative multiple times before the Haney fight. All these factors, combined with its very low levels in samples taken on April 19 and 20 (in the billionth of a gram), indicate that Ryan was a victim of supplement contamination and never obtained any performance-enhancing benefits from the microscopic amounts. in his system. We are confident that one of the natural supplements Ryan used prior to the fight will be found to be contaminated, so we are in the process of testing the supplements to determine the exact source.”
