“He tried to steal money and made a hole”: Canelo on De La Hoya

It has long been no secret that Canelo Alvarez and former promoter Oscar De La Hoya are not very amiable with each other, and on Wednesday things got heated between them at a press conference dedicated to Saturday’s fight between Canelo and Jaime Munguia.

This is the first time Canelo and De La Hoya have worked on the same promotion since Canelo’s bitter split from Golden Boy in 2020. Oscar sparked today’s renewed tension by addressing some of the criticisms Canelo has sent his way over the years.

“Yes, I was in rehabilitation several times. Yes, there have been some really tough moments in my life. And yes, there were times when work was not a priority for me because of my mental health, which I had neglected for so long,” De La Hoya said.

“But it doesn’t change the fact that Golden Boy was built by Canelo Alvarez, period. The company you fought for for decades has always had one name and it’s mine, so show it some damn respect.

As De La Hoya continued to speak, Canelo, sitting to his right, began speaking to him in Spanish off the microphone. Oscar then recalled a moment from 2018 when a then-unknown Munguia tried to step in for Canelo in his match against Gennady Golovkin after Alvarez failed two drug tests.

Canelo then stood up and walked over to De La Hoya as he continued to speak. De La Hoya stood his ground while the others stepped between them, then he took his seat and nothing else actually happened.

All this time, Munguia just sat in his seat and basically rested.

Canelo then spoke in English and didn’t mince his words.

“He tried to steal money and made a hole in the ground, that’s what I said,” Canelo said. “He’s in a fucking hole. He’s trying to draw attention to himself, not Munguia. He’s in… a hole. He tries to steal from his warriors and that’s exactly what he does. Damn it. Sweet… eh.

If there is a marketing “narrative” outside the ring on Saturday, it is certainly the still raw feelings between Canelo and Oscar, as the feelings between Canelo and Munguia, whom he will actually fight, seem respectful, just as Canelo did without the beef with Munguia.

"Mbilli, Berlanga, Bazinyan, I'm ready": Diego Pacheco wants bigger names

Diego Pacheco returns to action this Saturday when the adolescent and undefeated super middleweight contender takes on Maciej Sulecki in the DAZN main event in Carson, California.

Pacheco, 23, has stayed dynamic over the past few years and has been climbing the ranks in petite steps, making impressions along the way, but he hopes Saturday’s victory will put him among the top fighters at 168 pounds.

“The victory brings me one step closer,” said Pacheco (21-0, 17 KO). “If I can do that, hopefully it will give me a fight against someone who is in the top 10 with me, and then it will become a must-see for one of the titles, and next year I will get a shot at the world title.

“I don’t feel like I have to show anything special. People have already seen that I can knock people out, that I can hurt people in the body, I can drop guys with uppercuts, hurt them with jabs. I’m more about winning and looking good. That’s why I train, there’s no additional pressure.

Three specific names come to mind for Pacheco: Christian Mbilli, Edgar Berlanga and Erik Bazinyan.

“There is Mbilli, Berlanga, Bazinyan; there are many good players I would like to face and I am ready for any of them. It’s difficult for these guys to fight me because they think I’m a adolescent kid who hasn’t achieved much in this sport. But one fight at a time it’s getting to the point where they can’t say no to me anymore and those fights will have to be made and I’ve got a promoter in Eddie Hearn and Matchroom who’s lining up those fights, so at the right time I’ll be mixing it up with them everyone.

Mbilli is coming off a win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko earlier this month, and Berlanga is, of course, scheduled to face Canelo Alvarez in September. on September 14, and Bazinyan has his own substantial fight in September, where he will face Jaime Munguia on September 1. 20.

Ben Whittaker is open to the idea of facing Chris Eubank Jr

After Chris Eubank Jr expressed potential interest in fighting airy heavyweight Ben Whitaker, Whitaker spoke to Heavenly sports about the idea and says that of course he would be ready for it if it came into force.

“If there’s money there, sign me up. I’m bigger, younger, fresher. I wouldn’t say no,” he said Heavenly sports.

“I’m bigger,” he said. “There’s a reason they organize weight classes and I think he’s coming to the end of his career. I’m starting my career, so it’s probably the right time for me to grab him.

Whitaker has gained some following for his flashy and unconventional style, but has confined professional experience, having only had eight professional fights against low-level opponents. Still, he believes his skills exceed Eubank Jr.’s experience.

Granted, Whitaker knows that if he were ever to fight Eubank Jr., it would have to be at the agreed-upon catchweight, but if it’s a fight that makes financial sense, you can bet that all parties involved will find a way to come to terms.

Whitaker is currently scheduled to face Liam Cameron on October 12, which will be a gradual step up from his previous opponent, while Eubank Jr will appear on the same card when he faces Kamil Szeremeta in Riyad.
