Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn talks to Fight Hype about the outcome of the Tszyu vs. Fundora fight on an economic level and expresses his awareness that some entities in boxing are simply too stubborn to put their egos aside to do business.
Hearn also doesn’t miss the opportunity to mock Leonard Ellerbe for being dismissive of DAZN in the past when now all the major fights take place on the platform. Below you will find part of Hearn’s statement.
Hearn on his prediction that Tszyu vs Fundora will make around 10-15 thousand. PPV purchases and whether it will work
“As I understand it, less than 20,000, but who knows. Many people reported that Haney vs Prograis made 60,000 which is wrong… (Leonard Ellerbe) said they “made a show that lost millions of dollars.” We didn’t actually lose any money on that fight. It was indeed quite a success. I can say that Haney vs. Prograis gave four to five times more than Tszyu vs. Fundora. So in that respect it was quite successful.
“But by the way, Tszyu vs. Fundora was a great show, so it’s not ‘oh, Eddie said that.’ Congratulations, it just wasn’t a PPV. That’s all. And you would see it, and it’s going to take a lot of work.
“Look how long Leonard Ellerbe has been harassing DAZN for being an app? Number one, Leonard Ellerbe’s friend, Mr. Haymon, his next appearance will be on DAZN, Canelo v. Munguia. They actually need this platform. Second, as media reports suggest, PBC representatives held talks to try to get on DAZN. Who knows. Also tell me what gigantic fight is coming up around the world that’s already scheduled for the next three, four, five, six, seven months that isn’t on DAZN.
“I don’t really know what Leonard’s role is in all this. Is he still the CEO of Mayweather Promotions? I don’t know what they do and I don’t know what kind of fighters they are… I don’t really have a problem with Leonard. I think all these people are great at boxing… but when he says something, I don’t feel offended. I just answer. But when I say something, he loses his mind.
“What I learned in boxing is that some people will put their ego aside to do business, some people won’t. The reality is that PBC and Al Haymon really don’t want to do business with anyone. They don’t want to match their fighters to any other stable, I think we’ve established that… I’ve never even been able to talk about running a fight with PBC, which is really weird because now that they have no shows other than a few PPV shows on Amazon, we should actually do these events on a common platform where we could have huge fights where I could get their fighters out, we could do it on Amazon, we could do it on DAZN.
“You have to remember this, just because you have a gigantic platform doesn’t mean people are going to buy the PPV.”
