Eddie Hearn predicts Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury fight to be ‘biggest ever’

Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn has suggested the much-anticipated showdown between heavyweight superstars Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury could finally happen, with the promoter, who represents ‘AJ’, admitting the prospect of the British legends meeting in the ring could come after their next fights.

The pair famously never fought a battle, and the eternal flirtation between the rival camps over a “Battle of Britain” spectacle never led to a specific date. Both stars have major commitments for the rest of the year, with Fury set to rematch his conqueror Oleksandr Usyk in December.

The duo fought for the unified heavyweight world championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in May, with ‘The Cat’ winning via split decision. Meanwhile, Joshua responded to his two-fight loss to Usyk in style – reeling off a four-fight win streak, including a mesmerising knockout victory over Francis Ngannou in March.

Looking to continue his purple streak in the ring, he will fight for the IBF heavyweight title against Daniel Dubois at London’s Wembley Stadium in September, but reborn promoter of the Watford-born fighters Hearn is already looking to seal the deal for his client to face compatriot Fury after his upcoming fight.

“We will always regret it if we don’t make Fury vs. AJ,” he says openly he told iFL TV as he revealed the feelings in Joshua’s camp regarding the prospect. “There’s no doubt that if Riyadh was around and His Excellency (Alalshkih) was around two years ago, AJ and Fury would have happened.”

“That didn’t happen and now we have two massive fights: AJ vs Dubois on September 21 and Fury vs Usyk on December 21. If both of these guys (Joshua and Fury) win those fights, we have the biggest fight in the history of the sport, with a majority […] nice.

Hearn continued: “If they don’t do it, [both] win, you have a mega fight. Imagine AJ wins the heavyweight title and Fury loses, Fury can challenge AJ for the title. If Fury wins and AJ loses, AJ can challenge for the unified world title. And if they both lose, they can fight for bragging rights forever.

“So this is a massive one and I don’t want to get people’s hopes up, but you would think that now, the way boxing is and the energetic and strategic approach of His Excellency, this fight would happen next year. But let’s beat Dubois on September 21st.”

Meanwhile, Joshua, talking to him, seemed to agree with the idea. Queensberry Promotionssaying, “It has to happen, it’s just taking a long time, it has to happen. But he’s got his hands full, and so am I. Let’s both do our part and we’ll see a positive 2025.”

“I’m confident about that because we know that the people who are listening want good things to happen. So we could potentially see Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury stepping into the ring in partnership with Riyadh Season here in London.”

Meanwhile, heavyweight colossus Usyk also admitted that he would be open to completing a trilogy of fights with Joshua in the future. Considering that prospect, he said Daily mail“I don’t particularly want any rematches, but when I beat Tyson Fury for the second time and when Anthony Joshua beats Daniel Dubois, of course they’ll want to make a third fight.”

Junto Nakatani defended his WBC bantamweight title for a second time with a sixth-round knockout victory over Tasana Salapat in Japan.

Nakatani (28-0, 21 KO) entered the Salapat fight as a three-division world champion after serving as the WBO flyweight champion and great flybefore winning the WBC bantamweight title by defeating Alexandro Santiago in February. He last dropped in July, needing less than a round to knock out Vincent Astrolabio in his first defense.

The long-awaited, undisputed clash between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol ended in a controversial way on Saturday evening. Beterbiev won by majority decision, with the judges scoring him 114-114, 115-113, 116-112.

Bivol likely dominated the first third of the fight, and Beterbiev finished stronger despite never going that distance in his professional career.

In an interview immediately after the fight, Dimitry Bivol’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, he told our reporter “I couldn’t find anyone who would score for Beterbiev. Then you hear 116-112. How can you give Dmitry Bivol 4 rounds in this fight? This is no disrespect to Artur Beterbiev. (Turki Said) bad decision, we will do a rematch.”
