Dubois makes a statement, Wilder hits a wall: boxing rankings

The next update will appear on Monday, June 17.

Ranked fights during this period:

  • cruiser weight: (2) Chris Billam-Smith v (3) Richard Riakporhe, 15 June
  • cruiser weight: (6) Michał Cieślak vs (7) Isaac Chamberlain, June 15
  • Featherlight heavyweight: (7) Oleksandr Gvozdyk vs. David Benavidez, June 15
  • Featherlight heavyweight: (9) Dan Azeez vs. Hrvoje September, June 15
  • Super middleweight: (9) Kevin Lele Sadjo vs. Durval Palacio, June 13
  • average weight: (2) Carlos Adames vs. Terrell Gausha, June 15
  • Superlight: (1) Subriel Matias vs. (8) Liam Paro, June 15
  • Superlight: (7) Gary Antoine Russell vs. Alberto Puello, June 15
  • Featherlight: (2) Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs. (5) Frank Martin, June 15
  • Minimum weight: (1) Oscar Collazo vs. Gerardo Zapata, June 7

Comments: And now the division is waiting for Turki Alalshikh to pay for all its next moves. Usyk vs. Fury 2 is already scheduled for December, and it seems likely that we’ll soon find out what’s next for Anthony Joshua and others, and then the dominoes will fall.

Obviously there are some gigantic things here. Daniel Dubois moves into the No. 1 ranking after a win over Filip Hrgovic, who dropped to No. 6.9, and Zhilei Zhang moves into the No. 7 ranking after a win over Deontay Wilder, who moved out of the rankings for the first time in many, many years top ten heavyweight and looks like a cooked fighter, not even terribly risky because he just doesn’t throw punches anymore, and even if he does, it’s definitely not the same. It’s difficult to put into words, but you just can’t see the intention and confidence he had in his shots.

You could have Zhang a spot up, or he or Dubois ahead of Kabayel.

Upcoming Fights: (1) Oleksandr Usyk vs. (2) Tyson Fury, December. 21

Upcoming Fights: (2) Chris Billam-Smith vs. (3) Richard Riakporhe, June 15 … (6) Michal Cieślak vs. (7) Isaac Chamberlain, June 15

Comments: Michael Eifert would be officially inactive in the next ranking, but why not now? Never mind, man. He was sitting here because of the kind of laziness I was talking about earlier, where you just stick with a guy there because he did one thing that time and he doesn’t do anything else, and when you think about it, often it wasn’t even that great, or something.

In second place was Ravidoje “Sizzling Rod” Kalajdzic. 10, at least for now. He will face David Morrell in August, and both Morrell and David Benavidez – who will face Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15 – should come into the league soon and shake up this division.

Upcoming Fights: (7) Oleksandr Gvozdyk vs. David Benavidez, June 15 … (9) Dan Azeez vs. Hrvoje September, June 15 … (10) Radivoje Kalajdzic vs. David Morrell, August. 3

Comments: Christian Mbilli easily defeated Mark Heffron, and now he will face Sergiy Derevyanchenko in a much better duel, which will take place on August 8. 17, so at least on paper he will take a step forward.

Upcoming Fights: (9) Kevin Lele Sadjo vs. Durval Palacio, June 13… (3) Christian Mbilli vs. (5) Sergiy Derevyanchenko, August. 17

Comments: Hamzah Sheeraz made a real statement after his victory over Austin Williams, who fell out of the top 10 and Sheeraz climbed into the top 10. Williams could have stayed in 3rd place. I think 10; he lost in a really high quality match and was stopped because he didn’t stop trying to win. I think Williams would do it probably he beat Nathan Heaney or Shane Mosley Jr, but now we’ll see how he bounces back because whatever flaws these two have, they’re tough as hell and they fight hungry.

Upcoming Fights: (2) Carlos Adames vs. Terrell Gausha, June 15… (1) Janibek Alimkhanuly vs. Andrei Mikhailovich, July 13

Upcoming Fights: (3) Israil Madrimov vs. Terence “Bud” Crawford, August. 3

Upcoming Fights: (10) Lewis Crocker vs. Conah Walker, June 22… (1) Jaron “Boots” Ennis vs. (4) Cody Crowley, July 13

Comments: Well, here we go. Jack Catterall is still better than today’s Josh Taylor and this time he got an official W that proved it without a doubt. Catterall remains at number 1. He currently sits fourth in a rather strange top four for various reasons, while Taylor drops out of the top ten and is replaced by Dalton Smith.

Upcoming Fights: (1) Subriel Matias vs. (8) Liam Paro, June 15… (7) Gary Antuanne Russell vs. Alberto Puello, June 15… (3) Teofimo Lopez vs. Steve Claggett, June 29… (6) Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz vs. Jose Valenzuela, August. 3

Upcoming Fights: (2) Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs. (5) Frank Martin, June 15… (3) Shakur Stevenson vs. Artem Harutyunyan, July 6… (4) William Zepeda vs. Giovanni Cabrera, July 6… (8) ) Keyshawn Davis vs. Miguel Madueno, July 6… (6) Andy Cruz vs. Antonio Moran, August. 3

Upcoming Fights: (10) Andres Cortes vs. Abraham Nova, June 21

Comments: Nick Ball won his first world title in a really good fight against Raymond Ford, close but I think the right guy definitely won. I would expect the Ford could add some weight; he talked about it after winning the belt and stayed because fighting the ball brought good money in a gigantic program.

Upcoming Fights: (2) Rafael Espinoza vs. Sergio Chirino, June 21… (1) Luis Alberto Lopez vs. Angelo Leo, August. 10

Comments: Azat Hovhannisyan is out of the game due to inactivity.

Upcoming Fights: (7) Liam Davies v Shabaz Masoud, 20 July

Upcoming Fights: (1) Junto Nakatani vs. (10) Vincent Astrolabio, July 20

Upcoming Fights: (1) Juan Francisco Estrada vs. (3) Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, June 29… (2) Kazuto Ioka vs. (4) Fernando Martinez, July 7… (10) Suzumi Takayama vs. Isao Aoyama, July 18. .. (5) Kosei Tanaka vs. Jonathan Rodriguez, July 20

Comments: Julio Cesar Martinez vacated the WBC title with plans to move up to the next level full-time, so he’s out of the fight.

Upcoming Fights: (1) Bright Edwards vs. Adrian Curiel, June 29

Upcoming Fights: (9) Shokichi Iwata vs. Jahzeel Trinidad, July 6… (3) Carlos Canizales vs. Ivan Garcia, July 19

Upcoming Fights: (1) Oscar Collazo vs. Gerardo Zapata, June 7… (2) Ginjiro Shigeoka vs. (9) Pedro Taduran, July 28

Upcoming Fights: (4) Chantelle Cameron vs. Elhem Mekhaled, July 20

Angelo Leo knocks out Luis Alberto Lopez

Angelo Leo knocks out Luis Alberto Lopez

Angelo Leo won both the IBF featherweight title and a spot among the 2024 knockout ranks with a shocking one-punch knockout of Luis Alberto Lopez.

Leo (24-1, 11 KO), fighting out of his hometown of Albuquerque, laid out a clear and effective game plan: take the jab, punish Lopez’s (30-3, 17 KO) crazy swings, get inside with body shots, and tie up before Lopez will have time to respond. Still, Lopez kept it competitive throughout with his trademark clumsy jumps, and was especially successful with a backslash as Leo dipped inside. The rounds often came down to who would take the lead first, resulting in constant swings in momentum that left the fight up for grabs as the championship rounds approached.

Midway through the 10th, Lopez fired a jab and dropped his right hand in the process, allowing Leo to come back with an absolutely perfect left hook that immediately put out the lights of “Venado.” Lopez hit her head on the mat, 100% frozen, and barely managed to regain even a fraction of consciousness as the counter reached 10.

The 30-year-old Leo, who has lost almost two and a half years of his excellent form, is now officially a two-division champion. He came in with the right plan, continued to execute it despite Lopez’s best efforts, and ultimately knocked down one of the most strong featherweights in the game.

As for Lopez, his cavalier approach to defense finally caught up with him. Its power and unique style were not enough to save it, leaving its technical shortcomings in the foreground. He needs to rebuild a bit; he will never be a conventional boxer and he shouldn’t try to be one because it doesn’t play to his strengths, but now that he can no longer trust his beard, he absolutely needs to get his act together.

As a side note, I would like to draw attention to the needy performance of referee Ernie Sharif. Sharif was inconsistent in delivering a series of low blows and rabbit punches and lacked any authority, offering only stern warnings and the occasional punishment. He wasn’t prepared for this kind of brutal fight.

Lindolfo Delgado defeats Bryan Flores in an undefeated fight

2016 Olympian Lindolfo Delgado maintained his unblemished record with a hard-fought split decision win over Bryan Flores.

Delgado (21-0, 15 KO) started the fight quite slowly, but in the third period he caught the super-aggressive Flores (26-1-1, 15 KO), who crossed from the right side and knocked him to the ground. Instead of pressing his advantage, he opted to stay in cruise control, allowing Flores to take the reins with constant activity and eye-catching power shots.

Delgado woke up in the sixth set, showing off noticeably stronger punches, and in the seventh he had a lucky break when Flores, fresh from a warning for a low blow, was awarded a point when his left hand bounced off Delgado’s elbow and hit him in the groin.

The action was steady, if not particularly engaging, but soon picked up considerably. The pair spent the last few rounds trading at close range, with Flores relying on mighty clinch work and Delgado relying on powerful combinations. Flores seemed to run out of strength in the ninth throw, but he came out stronger and played a very close final round.

Despite this surge, Delgado’s overdue efforts were enough to earn him legitimate scores of 96-92 and 95-93. The third, 96-92 for Flores from Chris Tellez, was borderline undefendable.

Delgado doesn’t appear to be a threat to the division’s elite, but if he can get started faster and become more effective, he will have the tools to be at his best. As for Flores, I hope to see more of him on future top-tier cards.

Noela Mikaelian vs Ryan Rozicki fight has been postponed to September 28 on PPV

Noela Mikaelian vs Ryan Rozicki fight has been postponed to September 28 on PPV

Don King’s only champion, WBC cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian, will meet Ryan Rozicki at the Sept. 28 event at King’s usual haunt, Casino Miami Jai Alai.

Future viewers will be able to watch the show “on Pay Per View via Triller TV, DonKing.com and Itube247.com”

Mikaelian (27-2, 12 KO) has fought just four fights since an extremely questionable decision defeat to Mairis Briedis in the WBSS tournament in 2018. After two victories over restricted opponents, he outclassed faded prospect Youri Kayembre Kalenga and earned a shot at champion Ilunga Makabu, whom he then brutally knocked out in three last November.

A June date with Rozicki (20-1, 19 KO) fell through after Mikaelian suffered an injury, making it his first fight in almost 11 months.

Canadian Rozicki has won seven in a row since losing to Oscar Rivas in 2021, but on paper his streak is better than it actually is. His biggest victory, a split decision over challenger Yamil Alberto Peralta, was such an egregious blowout that the WBC outright refused to let Rozicki hang on the alphabet trinket. He was last seen handing an exceptionally overcooked Olanrewaju Durodola his eighth stoppage-time defeat in December.

Pay-per-view worthy? Not at all, but at least the truly talented Mikaelian was back in action.
