Following yesterday’s opening press conference for the May 4 fight between Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia, Canelo spoke to members of the media about the respectful nature of the fight-starter, as well as responding to those critical of his decision not to face David Benavidez. Check out what he had to say on these topics below.
Canelo on his tranquil press conference with Munguia after the match started
“I always respect more a fighter (who) shows respect because then you realize you’re going to have a good fight because a fighter who says a lot of things comes into the fight scared. I like this type of fight because I know it will be a great fight.”
About how it felt to be on stage with De La Hoya again
“Honestly, I don’t like people like that. That’s it. But I feel comfortable because it’s my country, not his country. At the end of the day, I feel comfortable with myself, with everything I’ve done, because everything you see, we did it, no one else: Team Beltran, PBC and Canelo, that’s it.
About his supposed split from PBC just to come back for this fight
“I am very content to work with everyone. I’m content to work with Al Haymon and he’s content to work with me, and if something comes up or there’s something more critical to me, I’ll do it and I’ll be fine with Haymon, with everyone. I like working with everyone and I know that I am very disciplined, I work very demanding and that’s why I can do anything.
I am not continuing to fight David Benavidez
“He offered the amount he said, the amount I could make with anyone. So it’s nothing… he brings nothing to me. He only brings in 25 pounds more (on fight night). That’s it. But if there is a promoter, not him, because he has nothing to offer me, no money – then I am the only one. But if some promoter I’m working with comes to me and says, “I’m offering you $150, $200 million, I’m fighting tomorrow.” That’s the only reason I’m fighting him because the only thing he brings to the table is an extra 25 pounds.”
He will come back if he feels pressured to fight Benavidez
“I don’t have to fight anyone. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone because I remember what happened with Golovkin… so I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. So this fight with Jaime Munguia you have to respect because this fight is more critical than other fights.
“So it is what it is. And remember when you asked me about Golovkin and I’m fighting Golovkin, and then Callum Smith, and then Billy Joe Saunders, and then Caleb Plant, and then – so it’s never enough for you. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone anymore. I’ve done everything in my career.”
