Coach Robert Garcia shares his perspective on Ryan Garcia’s victory over Devin Haney, how the victory will enhance his career going forward and why, if it were up to him, he would slowly bring Haney back onto the field. Check out some of what he had to say below.
Robert Garcia on Ryan’s victory over Devin
“I think Ryan getting the hook in the first round and hurting Haney gave him the confidence that he could do it. And look, he dropped him three times – I can’t say it looked uncomplicated because the rounds were very close and in fact, if there were no knockdowns, Haney probably would have won. But the knockouts made the difference…
“Ryan has a great left hook, it puts him on top of the world. He is already very popular and this will make him a much bigger superstar. He deserved it, man. He deserved it.”
On how long it might take for Haney to recover physically and mentally from this fight
“Derrick James is right, he is adolescent. So the kid will get better. He will come back and be champion again. I don’t think this will be the end of his career, but maybe he should take a break for the rest of the year. Start training at the end of the year, fight next year.
“I wouldn’t recommend he fights this year unless he gets a fight booked and tuned in at the end of the year, then he can get away with it. But the next substantial, solid fight – the rematch – shouldn’t be. The rematch should happen in the summer or next year if he wants a rematch.”
How the WBC decided not to relinquish the world title to Haney and allowed him to retain it despite the defeat
“Honestly, the first thing is when your opponent doesn’t make weight and it’s still a title fight and you lose it, the title should remain vacant. It has always been this way, this is the rule. If it was a title fight, it only mattered to Haney because he was the champion. Ryan can’t become champion if he wins, and that’s exactly what happened. But if you lose, you are no longer the champion. The title should be left blank.
“…Haney is still the champion, which is fine for him, but that means he has to defend his title, so I’d rather not have the title and come back slowly, with Haney.”
