On May 25, a pretty decent double bill was announced for Quebec, Canada. In the super middleweight division, undefeated crowd pleaser Christian Mbilli will fight for his second fight this year when he faces Briton Mark Heffron. France’s Mbilli is very fun to watch and his punching power and desire to score a knockout make him so. Heffron is a solid enough fighter, but less than a year ago he was stopped in three rounds by Jack Culcay and could be beaten quite quickly by the ferocious Mbilli.
Mbilli, 26-0(22) wants what every fighter in or near his weight class wants, and that is a shot at Canelo. Who knows if Mbilli will get what he wants, but don’t bet on it. Heffron, 30-3-1(24), doesn’t think he will derail Mbilli in the 28-year-old’s first fight since signing with Top Rank. Heffron, 32, at least scored a victory, albeit at a much lower level.
The joint film will mark the return of Russian beast Arslanbek Makhmudov, who was last seen unmasked after a painful attack on the body of Agit Kabayel. The statuesque Makhmudov was seen by some as the next large thing in the heavyweight division, and his loss was something of a disappointment. Makhmudov’s opponent will be Miljan Rovcanin.
In fact, Makhmudov-Miljan Rovcanin could be seen as a failed match as both players badly needed confidence after being stopped. This fight, like the Mbilli-Heffron deal, may not last long, but it will be fun to watch.
The same can be said about Mbilla-Heffron. How far can Mbilli go and can Makhmudov or Fa rebuild and do something great?
