Anthony Joshua blames ‘intense’ training regime for speeding

Published

on

Anthony Joshua has blamed his speeding incident on his tough training regime, claiming his “intense” physical preparation may have led to him losing focus.

The 34-year-old was caught by Sussex Police driving his Range Rover Vogue at 44mph in a 30mph zone on the A26 in Lewes, East Sussex, on May 29.

He said his “physical and mental fatigue” may have “clouded his judgment” and that he deeply regretted the mistake he made.

Joshua did not appear in court in the case because speeding convictions are often heard in writing under the Uniform Judicial Procedure.

However, the boxer, who lost a prestigious fight to Daniel Dubois on Saturday, wrote a letter to the court in which he offered his “most genuine apologies”.

He told the judges he understood the importance of road safety and the potential consequences of driving too quick.

In his defense, Joshua said: “I am a professional athlete who is currently going through a very intense training camp.

“My schedule was extremely tight, and on the same day as the offence I had to go to or from training.

“The physical and mental fatigue from training may have impaired my judgment, which led to this loss of concentration.

“I realise that such circumstances do not justify speeding and I deeply regret allowing myself to make this mistake.”

He urged the court to consider the impact a driving ban could have on his career, telling judges: “As an athlete, I am very dependent on my ability to travel to and from training, which is often in locations that are arduous to access.”

Joshua already had three penalty points at the time of the offence. He was given four penalty points but was not disqualified from driving.

Hastings District Court also fined him £769 and ordered him to pay £90 costs and a £308 victim surcharge.

Anthony Joshua’s long-time rival Dillian Whyte has spoken out about his future following his devastating defeat to Daniel Dubois on Saturday night.

Whyte was one of 98,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium where Joshua played. brutally stopped in five rounds by Duboiswho defended the IBF world heavyweight title for the first time.

The fight was so one-sided that both fans and the boxing world demanded that “AJ” end his eleven-year professional career.

However, ‘The Bodysnatcher’, who fought the Watford man in the memorable 2016 British title clash, disagrees.

Speaking to talkSPORTWhyte condemned those who wrote an obituary for his former opponent, adding that “Dubois is no fool.”

“I think he has a heavyweight career ahead of him.

“You know, that’s the mistake we make as British fight fans. Someone has one or two losses and we start writing them off and saying they’re worthless and finished and all that.

“Which is bad because Anthony Joshua has been winning fights for the last eleven years.

“He’s had, what, three or four losses in 11 years? Only the top guys. Dubois is not a loser.”

Joshua, apparently unfazed by calls for him to retire, posted a video on social media on Monday confirming his intention to continue his boxing career.

With just a few days left until the event, it is unclear at this stage what the two-time world champion’s next move will be.

Dubois has stated that he would happily repeat that in a direct rematch, claiming he believes he could do a “better” job against the 34-year-old if they faced off a second time.

Also scheduled is a long-awaited clash with Alabama heavyweight Deontay Wilder, whose future is also in question after two consecutive defeats to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.

Daniel Dubois Shares Firm Stance On Rematch With Anthony Joshua After Brutal Knockout

Published

on

Daniel Dubois has expressed interest in a rematch with either Anthony Joshua or Oleksandr Usyk, stating that he would choose the opponent who “pays him the most.”

On Saturday night at Wembley Stadium, Dubois successfully defended his IBF heavyweight title against British rival Joshua, defeating the two-time former world champion four times.

Joshua took to social media on Monday to emphasize that his boxing adventure is not over yet, and that in the future he is considering the possibility of a rematch with Dubois and a possible giant fight with Tyson Fury.

Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren stated that while his fighter’s contract does not specifically call for an immediate rematch with Joshua, they could meet again if they reach an agreement.

In the meantime, Usyk is scheduled to rematch Fury on December 21 for the WBA, WBO and WBC titles.

Dubois was defeated by Usyk in August 2023, but managed to do so by knocking the Ukrainian down in the fifth round – a blow that was deemed a low blow, giving the champion extra time to recover.

The 27-year-old Londoner stressed that no matter which player he faces, the financial conditions must be favourable to him.

“I would like a rematch, but really, the one that pays me the most,” Dubois said. talkSPORTWhen asked about the possibility of meeting Joshua again, he replied: “Yeah, if it happens in the future, then yes. If it happens next time, then yes. I want to try.

“I want to do even better next time. I know where I need to improve, so as a champion and as a fighter, I just want to prove people wrong every time, and that’s what we did.

“I think I would have been much better than that (last fight). It was a great spectacle, a Rocky-style fight, but next time I believe I’ll be more clinical, more pointed, everything will be better.”
