Andy Cruz crushes Antonio Moran via seventh-round knockout

Published

on

LOS ANGELES – Andy Cruz was briefly put to the test, but the highly touted lightweight contender landed a powerful right hook against Antonio Moran, thrashing the Mexican contender and scoring the second knockout of his burgeoning career Saturday at BMO Stadium.

Cruz landed a well-placed tough uppercut on Moran early in the seventh round, then went on the offensive for the rest of the round, following the wounded Moran around the ring and dealing him a lot of damage.

In the final seconds of the fight, Cuban 2020 Olympic gold medalist Cruz (4-0, 2 KOs) landed another powerful right hook, forcing Moran (30-7-1, 21 KOs) to the ropes. Referee Gerard White ruled the sequence a knockdown, and as Moran tried to get back to his feet, he stumbled and fell face first into the opposite corner on shaky legs, forcing White to stop the fight at 2:59.

Cruz landed more punches than Moran, 125 to 58. Moran had more work than Cruz, landing 333 punches compared to 316, but Cruz was more correct, landing 40 percent of his total punches and 45 percent of his power punches.

Cruz started the fight confidently, showing off his speed, reach and distance to land pointed jabs and quick right counters.

Moran had his best moment of the fight in the fourth round but didn’t capitalize on it. In the final 30 seconds of the round, Moran wobbled Cruz with a tough left hook to the ear and staggered him. Cruz quickly went on the defensive and backed up the ring to avoid further damage before holding on as the bell sounded.

Cruz recovered early in the fifth round, but it was obvious he wasn’t landing his right jab as often as before.

Moran continued to push the pace in the sixth round, taking Cruz down and landing several combinations, especially to the body. But Cruz held his ground and responded with a powerful jab of his own, the same punch that ultimately helped seal the deal in the seventh.

Cruz, 28, trained by Bozy Ennis, the father and trainer of IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis, is already ranked in the top 10 at lightweight by three of the four major sanctioning organizations.

Moran, a 31-year-old Mexican, comes into the fight after knocking out Romero Duno in January and has suffered losses over the years to the likes of Devin Haney, Arnold Barboza Jr., Jose Pedraza and Jamaine Ortiz.

In a prelim that was not shown on the broadcast, Terence Crawford’s teammate Steven Nelson outboxed Marcos Vazquez, knocking down the previously undefeated Mexican three times and knocking him out in the fifth round of their super middleweight clash.

Nelson (20-0, 16 KOs) busted Vazquez’s (20-1-1, 10 KOs) nose in the third round and scored a knockdown with a straight right hook, but referee Ray Corona initially didn’t call it a knockdown. Vazquez was clearly hurt, and Nelson made sure to capitalize on that and scored an official knockdown shortly after with another tough right hook.

During the break between rounds, the California State Athletic Commission used replay review to overturn Corona’s decision, officially awarding Nelson two knockdowns in the round.

In the fifth round, Nelson, a 36-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, floored Vazquez, a 34-year-old from Mexico, with a powerful uppercut, knocking him down for the third and final time.

Kneeling, Vazquez failed to attempt to get back to his feet, forcing Corona to break the six-count and end the action 50 seconds into the round.

In the opening fight, welterweight contenders Ziyad Almaayou (5-0-1, 1 KO) and Michal Bulik (6-7-1, 2 KO) began the eight-fight spectacle with a fierce six-round clash that ended in a draw.

Two judges scored the fight 57-57, while the third scored it 59-55 in favor of Almaayou.

Almaayou (5-0-1, 1 KO), the 24-year-old Saudi contender from Los Angeles, survived a tough test against the combative Bulik (6-7-1, 2 KO), a 35-year-old left-hander from Poland who gave the undefeated Almaayou everything he could muster.

The Buddy McGirt-trained Almaayou started the fight robust but faltered in the second half of the fight as Bulik drew blood and knocked out the mouthpiece of a weakened and out of breath Almaayou.

Heavyweight Pryce Taylor

Fighting for the first time with the full support of his promoter, Salita Promotions, undefeated Brooklyn heavyweight Pryce Taylor later said he was confident and confident he could do well in boxing.

Taylor (5-0, 3 KO), 28, defeated KeShawn Jackson last Thursday night in Flint, Michigan, fighting in an exhibition put on by his promoter in which he recorded an impressive third-round stoppage to finish his 2024 campaign on a high. year note.

“It was good to fight on a bigger stage, in a compact arena, in a nice atmosphere,” Taylor said about his first fight with a promotional contract. “My manager, Keith Sullivan, supported me by agreeing to sign with Salita Promotions. He talked to several promoters, but we felt that Dimitri Salita would be the right candidate for me.

“I felt like I had succeeded; I felt essential, but that was just the beginning. It was the same on fight night, I felt respect and appreciation from the entire Salita promotional company. My goal is to be a more recognizable player and be recognized by the fans. I’m hungry to perform in the coming year.”

“Four knockdowns were counted. I really hurt him with a body shot and when he felt my power he was done. I threw a barrage of punches into the corner (ss photo below) and he tried to hit me with a windmill punch. Then I hit him with a check hook, which ended the fight. He (Jackson) didn’t want to get knocked out, so he tried to show he was still fighting.”

“Of course,” Sullivan commented, “I’m joyful with the victory. This was another developmental fight and Pryce is learning and developing as a fighter. We had a busy year with 8 fights scheduled and 5 that actually crossed the line, so it was a very good first year for him as a pro. Right after that, I talked to Dimitri to arrange the next fight. We hope to have it scheduled in the coming weeks.”

Looking ahead to 2025, Taylor wants his next fight to be a six-rounder scheduled for his next outing, then move up to eight to fight for the junior title.

“I will now train to play 10 rounds,” Taylor concluded, “so that I will be ready when it comes time to play 12 rounds.”
