Clear Edwards and Galal Yafai will settle their differences next Saturday at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, with the winner’s prize being the interim WBC flyweight title.

Edwards (21-1, 4 KO) enters this fight as a boxer, not a puncher.

“Showtime” won the IBF world title in April 2021 after a masterclass against Moruti Mthalane and defended four times before losing to the talented fighter Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez in December 2023 in an attempt to unify as the WBO champion dominated before forcing him to retire after nine rounds.

The 28-year-old was last suspended in June, defeating Adrian Curiel by wide technical decision, and the fight was interrupted due to an injury suffered by the Croydon resident.

2020 Olympic gold medalist Yafai (8-0, 6 KO) was on his way to winning world titles, with his professional debut coming in a 10-round stoppage of Carlos Bautista to win the WBC International title.

Since then, the 31-year-old southpaw has defended the belt five times, and Yafai added to his momentum with two wins this year, stopping Agustin Gauto in the eighth round in April and then warming up for Edwards with a third-round stoppage of Sergio Oroczo Oliva in September.

Conway argues with Kelly

The vacant Commonwealth middleweight title is up for grabs on the undercard, and Kieron Conway (21-3-1, 6 KO), who is on a three-fight win streak since a decision loss to Austin “Ammo” Williams in 2022, should have too much for former Midlands Area champion Ryan Kelly (19-4-1, 8 KO).

Vuong comes face to face with Gwynne

Cameron Vuong (6-0, 3 KO) is gaining a step up in class and will likely be tested by former British, Commonwealth and European champion Gavin Gwynne (17-3-1, 5 KO).

Walker meets Ritson

At the crossroads of welterweight fights, Conah Walker will face Lewis Ritson (23-4, 13 KO) over 10 rounds.

Walker (13-3-1, 5 KO) defeated Cyrus Pattinson last year, and last time he defeated Lewis Crocker, losing narrowly.

Ritson’s best days came as a lightweight and he lost three of his last five fights, last defeating Paddy Donovan in the ninth round.

Smith is back

Callum Smith is fighting for the first time since losing to Artur Beterbiev when he faced Carlos Galvan over eight rounds.

Smith was stopped in seven rounds by Beterbiev in January and should return to winning ways against Galvan, who suffered stoppage losses to the likes of Caleb Plant and current unified middleweight champion Janibek Alimkhanuly.

Undercard remaining

The last 10-round fight will take place in the lightweight heavyweight division, and Troy Jones (11-0, 6 KO) will be able to defend his English champion title, defeating Michael Stephenson (9-2) on points.

In the second scheduled eighth round, Hamza Uddin (2-0, 1 KO) should defeat Benn Norman (7-5) in a flyweight fight.

In six rounds, Aaron Bowen (3-0, 2 KO) can stop James Todd (4-3-2) in the middleweight division, and in the super featherweight division Ibraheem Sulaimaan (5-0, 3 KO) should defeat Marvin Solano (24). -20, 8 KOs).

Super middleweight debutant Taylor Bevan should start with an early victory over Greg O’Neill (7-8-1, 1 KO).

Katie Taylor’s dream of a marquee clash in Croke Park appears to be hanging in the balance, with her coach questioning the feasibility of the event.

The Irish boxing star had ambitions of showcasing his talents at the esteemed Dublin arena, which has a capacity of 80,000, but has so far had to settle for the much smaller 3Arena, which has a capacity of just 9,000, to stage his triumphant fights against Chantelle Cameron.

Fresh off a win over Amanda Serrano and facing the potential loss of one of his titles, coach Ross Enamait suffered another loss, expressing reservations about the prospect of Taylor achieving his ultimate goal.

Speaking to Radio Kerry, Enamait noted: “I know it’s right to say she wants to fight here and there, but when we’re there we just don’t see anyone. There may be eight people or 80,000, we still have to go out on the field and win this fight.

“[Katie] she probably wants to fight in Vegas someday because she’s never done it, and in Croke Park, I know it’s kind of – it’s happened off and on, I don’t know if it’ll ever happen. [It] that would be nice, but I don’t know if the ship has sailed yet.

Despite previous talks between Croke Park directors and Matchroom magnate Eddie Hearn, no agreement has been reached, largely due to the prohibitive costs of staffing and security measures.

“Croke Park is truly a dream come true,” Taylor said in 2022. “I’ve been a professional boxer for six years and I haven’t really fought at home, so I’m looking forward to this fight coming home. I hope it happens.”

Taylor is currently expected to relinquish her WBC lightweight title, having not competed at 135 pounds since her victory over Karen Carabajal over two years ago.

The governing body will decide on the matter at its meeting next month.

A third welterweight fight with Cameron appears likely after Taylor’s second win over Amanda Serrano earlier this month in the co-main event of Jake Paul’s triumph over Mike Tyson, from which she won by unanimous decision.

However, her impressive 24-1 record may soon come to an end, as she previously admitted she feels she has “one or two more fights left.”

The Texas showdown broke records, grossing more than $18 million and becoming the most lucrative boxing event ever held outside Las Vegas. Despite this success, rumors of a rigged match have spread on social media, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the 27-year-old’s victory.

In response, Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, strongly rejected these allegations and any suggestion that Paul’s victory was in jeopardy. “Due to the widespread dissemination of erroneous and unsubstantiated claims that call into question the fairness of the Paul vs. Tyson, Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), would like to clarify the matter regarding the contractual arrangements and the nature of the fight,” the statement reads.

It continued to emphasize the legality of the event: “Rigging a professional boxing match is a federal crime in the United States. The Paul vs. Tyson fight was a professional fight sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

“Both fighters gave their all in good faith to win the fight. There were absolutely no restrictions – contractual or otherwise – around any of the players. Each boxer could employ his full arsenal to win the fight. consent to the contrary would violate the TDLR Boxing Rules.

“Nonsense and speculation are common in sports, and athletes and organizers must tolerate nonsense comments, jokes and opinions. But to suggest anything other than a full effort from these players is not only naive, but also an insult to the work they have put into their craft and the sport itself.

“It is even more illogical and absurd that MVP would debut as part of a promising long-term partnership with the largest streamer in the world – an organization that made its first-ever foray into live professional sports with Paul vs. Tyson would even consider it such a perverse violation of competition rules.”

The statement continued: “This is not the first time that Jake Paul has been met with unfounded skepticism or outright disbelief as a professional athlete and, quite frankly, the claim that his fight must have been faked is yet another blatant compliment he has received,” he said. “From his first day in the sport, people doubted his ability – unable to come to terms with how someone with his background had achieved so much in such a low time. Not only has Jake proven himself time and time again, but he continually sets historical records that speak for themselves.

“This event, which broke attendance and viewership milestones for professional sporting events, is another example of his ability to perform on the biggest stage. As long as Jake continues to exceed expectations, there will always be those who will try to discredit his achievements. We don’t accept doubt – it only motivates Jake to work harder and achieve more success.”
