Nate Diaz gained revenge on Jorge Masvidal tonight, winning a majority decision in a 10-round boxing rematch of his 2019 UFC fight.
One of the judges fought the fight even with the score 95-95, which was broken by two points in favor of Diaz 97-93 and 98-92.
Diaz, who is currently 1-1 in boxing following a loss to Jake Paul last year, isn’t going to fool anyone into thinking he’s a great boxer, but he has a dedicated, sizable fan base that has reportedly helped sell more than 18,000 tickets he’ll fight tonight in Anaheim for this match, and if he can continue to find fights like the ones he did against Masvidal and Paul, he’ll potentially have more years of making money as a fighter ahead of him.
The crowd was also quite entertained with what they paid for in the main event, and while the form on display certainly isn’t on par with real top (or mid-level) boxing, that’s really all that will matter as long as Diaz continues to find success in these events .
Shane Mosley Jr spoiled Daniel Jacobs’ return to the ring, winning a near unanimous decision over 10 rounds with scores of 99-91, 99-91 and 100-90. The 37-year-old Jacobs (37-5, 30 KO) didn’t have much in the ring, and Mosley (22-4, 12 KO) won his fifth victory in a row without any major problems.
You really wouldn’t expect to see Jacobs again after this performance, but you can’t write it off. It’s boxing, and boxers box for money. There have been bigger names than Jacobs cashing checks over the years. As for Mosley, the win is what it is and nothing more, but it is noteworthy enough that he will be included at 160 or 168 in the future, and both of those divisions have room for noteworthy fights. He called for a fight against 160-pound titleholder Erislandy Lara.
In the next fight between former MMA fighters, Chris Avila won a six-round unanimous decision over Anthony Pettis with scores of 58-56, 59-55 and 59-55. This now means that Chris Avila is a better boxer than Roy Jones Jr, whom Pettis defeated in eight rounds about 15 months ago.
