Eddie Hearn attacks ‘idiots’ after Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight

Published

on

Eddie Hearn has brutally criticised the “idiots” who believe Mike Tyson should return to the boxing ring. Referring to the 58-year-old’s highly anticipated fight with Jake Paul, boxing promoter Matchroom expressed little enthusiasm for the upcoming fight.

Paul vs. Tyson has come under intense scrutiny since it was announced earlier this year, in enormous part because of the fighters’ significant 31-year age difference. The highly anticipated fight was originally scheduled for July 20 in Arlington, Texas, but had to be postponed until November 15 after the latter suffered an ulcer flare-up on a flight from Los Angeles to Miami in May.

Despite Tyson’s health issues being months away, Hearn insisted the legendary boxer would not take the risk of fighting Paul. “What, what, what the hell are we doing?” Hearn asked in disbelief, speaking to Daily mail“I’m lucky enough to have a company where we don’t have to do that. And I never will.”

Hearn immersed himself in the world of “influencer boxing” by promoting Paul’s brother Logan during his rematch with YouTuber KSI in November 2019. While the fight was a huge success — each fighter pocketed a guaranteed $900,000 just for showing up — the British promoter admitted his “heart wasn’t in it.”

With a number of thrilling fights on the horizon, including Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga, Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois and Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury II, Hearn said he has no need to promote the boxer as he approaches 60 – nor would he want to watch him fight.

“Anyone who thinks like that, [Tyson] should be in the ring right now, he either doesn’t have his best interests at heart or he’s an idiot,” he added. “Mike Tyson left boxing – what was it, what, 20 years ago, I don’t know, something like that – he got shot to pieces. Do you really think a fighter who got shot to pieces 20 years ago should come back now?

“I mean, I know he’s only fighting Jake Paul, but that doesn’t matter. Jake Paul is a powerful kid. He trains every day, he can punch. I get it, I get the business. I’m not criticizing them, but for me, no thanks, not in a million years.”

DON’T MISS:

Tyson’s return to the ring has attracted considerable attention, both good and bad, with 80,000 fans expected to fill AT&T Stadium and an additional 270 million Netflix subscribers able to watch the fight at home. During a raucous press conference in Modern York last month, he insisted the controversial fight was still on.

“It’s happening,” Tyson said. “I’m very prepared. I had a little adversity, I got unwell, but I feel better, I feel good. I’m just ready; I’ll talk and say my piece when I’m ready to fight.”

Anthony Joshua says conditions must be met for Tyson Fury fight to go ahead as Eddie Hearn has been sidelined

Published

on

But a mega-money clash with Fury now seems further away than ever. The pair have publicly agreed to fight twice before, but negotiations have fallen through, frustrating British fans and accusing both icons of greed.

If Joshua were to beat Dubois and Fury were to win his world title rematch with Oleksandr Usyk in December, it was widely believed the pair would finally meet in a unification fight in 2025. However, Frank Warren, the Gypsy King’s promoter, has now given the 2012 Olympic gold medalist hope that the fight could still happen.

Pressed on whether he thinks the Joshua vs. Fury fight is dead, he said: “I don’t know. “I think people might still want it, if he (Joshua) comes back and wins, who knows.

“Fury has to face Usyk in a rematch on December 21 first, but I hope he can do it. This heavyweight division is alive, losers fight losers and winners fight winners.”

The question remains whether ‘AJ’ will have a chance to pick up that potentially pivotal victory over Dubois. In an apparent response to Hearn’s claim, Warren, 72, also clarified the situation surrounding the next defense of his IBF world title, which he also manages through Queensberry Promotions.

“He doesn’t have a rematch in his contract. But there is one in AJ’s contract,” he said. “I’m fine with a rematch if they want to do it and the terms are right. But it’s too early. He has to savor the moment, he’s shown what he’s all about, fighting four world-class guys this year.”

For his part, Dubois has stated that he would love to face Joshua a second time, but is also open to fighting the winner of Fury vs. Usyk. However, the 27-year-old admitted that financial incentives will play a role in his final decision.

“I’d like a rematch, but really, any one of them — the one that pays me the most,” he said, also appearing on . “If there’s a rematch next time, then yes. I want to try. I want to do even better next time.”

Anthony Joshua took Mike Tyson’s advice after being knocked out by Daniel Dubois

Published

on

Anthony Joshua has reflected on his recent defeat to Daniel Dubois, but the wise words Mike Tyson shared with Errol Spence Jr. could be just as relevant for the British heavyweight.

Joshua entered the ring at Wembley to face Dubois on the back of a winning streak and seemingly having shaken off his defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.

Despite being tipped to win, Dubois dominated the fight, knocking Joshua down in the first and third rounds before securing the win in the fifth.

At 34, Spence is at a similar point in his career, having not fought since his inaugural loss to Terence Crawford in 2023.

Tyson, a former heavyweight champion, offered some sage advice during an appearance on “It Is What It Is,” reminding fighters that a single defeat doesn’t mean it’s over.

“The sky is the limit,” Tyson noted. “It means nothing, a loss. He [Spence] can still make a lot of money.

“That’s what today’s warriors do [do]They lose the fight, they get discouraged, [think] Maybe I won’t do it again. That’s life – don’t get discouraged.

“In life you lose… anything. You lose your job, you lose your mother, you lose your teeth, you lose your hair, and we have to go on living, we have to go on sailing.”

Joshua’s current record is 28-4, after failing to take the IBF heavyweight title from Dubois.

Despite the setback, promoter Eddie Hearn remains hopeful about Joshua’s future, expecting him to sign a rematch clause with the 27-year-old Dubois.

AJ has already made it clear that he has no plans to retire and will apparently heed the advice of American icon Tyson.

“I’m sure he’ll exercise that rematch clause. I think that’s a given,” Hearn noted after the Wembley fight, admitting that Joshua needs to rest before taking on such a risky fight again.

“This guy [Dubois] He’s still gaining confidence, but he’s going to believe he can hurt Dubois. He’s going to believe he can beat him. But full credit to Daniel Dubois, he deserves all the credit tonight, that was a great performance from Daniel.”

Frank Warren, Dubois’ promoter, has hinted at the possibility of a future fight between Dubois and Oleksandr Usyk, after Usyk first faces Tyson Fury.

And on Saturday he said: “Everybody here saw the champion perform tonight. Two great fighters in the ring and the champion perform. And I think he did everything that was asked of him.

“He showed his courage, he showed his skills, his resilience. AJ caught him with a shot there and I was worried about that. But he caught him with a counter and that’s what happened. What a great, great fight by both guys.”

Joe Joyce breaks silence after boxer expresses concerns about ‘freezing out’ in live TV interview

Published

on

Joe Joyce tried to play down his concerns after appearing to freeze while speaking during the Anthony Joshua-Daniel Dubois fight at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.

The 39-year-old, who has made few public appearances since his shock defeat to Derek Chisora in July, spoke to TNT Sports about his future.

Joyce started off with some enthusiasm, saying, “Well, let’s fight, man, I need to get back in the gym and I’m on my way, man. I’m on my way…”

However, he then seemed to pause and looked confused, prompting his interviewer to break the awkward silence by saying, “Joe, it’s a pleasure,” and move on.

Fans were quick to react with concern, with @HeartBreak_J posting online: “Joe Joyce froze on air,” along with a melancholy emoji. People like @ChanChanChanZZZ went further, suggesting it was an all-too-familiar trend for the former World Boxing Organisation (WBO) interim titleholder.

“I recently watched a few miniature interviews with Joe Joyce,” he wrote. “And I have to say I am really concerned about his health, as he clearly has difficulty expressing himself.”

Instagram influencer @big_daddy_gman asked: “This isn’t even humorous, but it is humorous at the same time. What happened here, man?”

That question prompted Joyce, who has lost three of his last four professional fights following losses to Zhilei Zhang last year, to answer.

Sharing a clip of the interview on his Instagram Story, he said: “I SHOULD HAVE PREPARED WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY,” but that explanation will be deemed by fans as far from comprehensive.

Joyce was unbeaten in his first 15 professional fights before being stopped by Chinese star Zhang in February last year. Four months later he was knocked out in the third round of their rematch, a loss that seemed to end his world title hopes.

But after beating Kash Ali, his fight with Chisora in May was widely seen as a last chance to revive his career. Instead, it was his fellow veteran who was awarded an all-British fight, with the judges scoring it 97-92, 96-94, 96-94 in his favour.

Following the loss, Joyce’s manager, Adam Morallee, told Boxing Social that the 2016 Olympic silver medalist now faces a critical career decision. “It was a very, very tough, brutal fight for both of them,” he said.

“I think it will be a really tough task for Joe to find his way back to the top now, but given his career and eventual retirement, it is a question for him.

“There will always be fights for Joe Joyce, there will always be fights for someone who fights like that – who takes one to give another, there will always be.”
