Boxing News Chooses Next Generation Heavyweights

THERE’S NO denying the heavyweight division is on the brink of a radical change. Undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk is now 37, while Tyson Fury, who will try to regain his title later this year, turned 36 on August 12.

Anthony Joshua, who is hoping to fight the winner of the rematch, is the youngest of the three at 34, but his promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed the 2012 Olympic champion could retire in as little as 18 months.

The good news, though, is that the wave of weightlifting is ready and waiting for the three greatest huge men of the current era to ride off into the sunset. Here are 10 who could become kings.

AMERICAN HOPE

Jared Anderson

Age: 24

Record: (17-1, 15 KOs)

Jared Anderson probably looked like the most complete heavyweight on this list, and at 24 years antique, he still has plenty of time to improve his all-around game. However, just as many people were falling over themselves to hand him the crown, Anderson’s train was abruptly derailed by Martin Bakole in August.

Anderson has barely made a mistake in 17 wins as a pro, but Bakole was clearly a step too far, too soon. The American was knocked down and stopped in the fifth round, and now the onus is on him to learn from the defeat and prove he can bounce back.

The truth is he has a lot of free time, but the Ohio man, who has no problem admitting he doesn’t love boxing, has been open about his desire to retire from the sport as soon as possible. A loss to Bakole could be the end of it — or he could disappear without a trace.

MIRACLE

Moses This is gonna hurt

Age: 19

Record: (9-0, 7 KOs)

If you’re looking to buy into any of the stocks on this list, Moses Itauma might be your best bet. At just 19 years antique and with plans to break Mike Tyson’s record as the youngest heavyweight champion, it’s scary to think how much the left-handed fighter can improve.

While a world title record next year will be too much for him, he seems to have it all: incredible punch selection, middleweight speed, knockout power, and what seems like a complete inability to get upset. However, Itauma, at just over 6-foot-2, isn’t the biggest on this list, and it will be engaging to see how his strength and power measure up to some of the heavyweight giants waiting.

THE RETURN OF THE CHILD

Daniel Dubois

Age: 26

Record: (21-2, 20 KOs)

The most highly regarded heavyweight on this list, it’s effortless to forget how youthful Daniel Dubois is. He retired after just a few senior amateur fights and has been learning on the job ever since.

After both losses – to Joe Joyce and then Oleksandr Usyk – he came under fire for being accused of ‘giving up’ in both, but he proved the naysayers wrong with back-to-back knockout wins over Jarrell Miller and then Filip Hrgovic, showing off his massive chin in both fights as he was caught level on several occasions.

That’s never a good tactic in boxing, let alone heavyweight, so there’s plenty of room for improvement, but he’s got time on his side. He could turn the division upside down by beating Anthony Joshua at Wembley on September 21.

CHARACTER

Richard Torrez

Age: 25

Record: (10-0, 10 KOs)

Trainee pilot, Rubik’s cube expert and aspiring gardener, Richard Torrez Jr., who has a high school education, is no average weightlifter. The bad news for the rest of the division is that he can also really fight.

After winning silver in the super heavyweight division at the 2020 Olympics, Torrez signed with Top Rank and has gone 10-0 with 10 KOs in just over two years as a pro. The mustachioed Californian was defeated by Bakhodir Jalolov (more on him later) in the Tokyo final and was also KO’d by him at the world championships – and given that both are signed to Top Rank, it’s likely they’ll meet in the paid ranks in the future.

What Torrez lacks in height he makes up for in angles, variation and combinations, and he hinted at a dazzling future when he stopped unbeaten American Brandon Moore in May. At the time of writing he has yet to make it past the eight-round mark, so it remains to be seen whether he will be a legitimate world title contender.

DARK HORSE

Justi Huni

Age: 25

Record: (10-0, 5 KOs)

What sets Justis Huni apart from the other names on this list is how much experience he’s managed to pack into just 10 fights. All but one of his pro appearances have been 10-round fights, and six of those have gone the distance, meaning he’s fought 74 rounds under the spotlight.

It could be argued that this suggests the 25-year-old may not have the power to really trouble those at the top, but the Queensland man has always found a way to win regardless. In two of his last three fights, he has defeated two very capable opponents by points, Andrew Tabiti and Kevin Lerena, suggesting that Huni is probably the furthest ahead of any heavyweight in the world with 10 fights or less.

Already in the top ten of the WBO rankings, his cooperation with Matchroom will open the doors to a career all over the world.

ATTRACTION

Johnny Fisher

Age: 25

Record: (12-0, 11 KOs)

Never mind the Chinese takeaway, the Instagram-famous dad or the astonishing legion of fans, the bottom line is that Johnny Fisher has evolved into a genuine heavyweight contender. His promoter Eddie Hearn has often suggested that Fisher’s career will be “entertaining”, belying the seriousness of the Romford Bull’s ambition to reach the top.

He possesses an incredible humility that has underpinned his immense progress in the ring, and his career has been a steady march through the lower echelons of the division to this point. But his dismantling of Alen Babic in just 36 seconds seemed to signal a change in perspective; the apprenticeship is over, and Fisher is ready to take the next step.

He faces huge challenges in the UK alone, but he has time on his side and the right attitude to improve. Oh, and he hits like a mule.

AMATEUR

Bakhodir Jalolov

Age: 30

Record: (14-0, 14 KOs)

It would be fair to say that the 30-year-old with 14 professional wins, Olympic and World Championship gold medals (twice) cannot be included in the list of the best youthful, promising heavyweights. However, despite his achievements to date, it seems that Bakhodir Jalolov has not yet fully realized what he can achieve in the professional ranks.

That’s partly because the huge Uzbek simply can’t stay away from the amateur code and once again represented his country at the Paris Olympics, winning a second consecutive gold in the super heavyweight division

He is expected to focus on a life of punching for money, and it is no exaggeration to say that he has all the tools to become the most dominant powerlifter on the planet within the next decade. Being able to do that and actually doing it are two different things, however.

GREAT MAN

Gurgen Hovhanisyan

Age: 26

Record: (6-0, 6 KOs)

At 6’1” and 270 pounds, Gurgen Hovhannisyan is the biggest specimen on our list. Since moving to Los Angeles, he has been steadily improving his performance under the watchful eye of coach Joe Goossen.

As his nickname suggests, “Large Gug” already has the size to make life uncomfortable for anyone, but he’s no bully on the flat track. He’s surprisingly agile on his feet and technically gifted with his hands. He applies pressure thoughtfully and, in the ring at least, has made steady progress to 6-0, all of it swift. The question is whether Hovhannisyan will get the support he needs to really make an impression at the top of the heavyweight rankings. He’s spent all of 2023 out of the ring and has boxed under a variety of different promotional banners.

A man of his style, size and quality is always welcome in the “Who Needs Him?” Club, but if given the chance he can prove his worth as a headliner.

NATURAL

Fabio Wardley

Age: 29

Record: (17-0-1, 16 KOs)

At 29 years antique and a former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion, Fabio Wardley seems like the perfect man to capitalise on the change at the top of the heavyweight division.

Considering his lack of amateur experience and only a handful of white-collar fights before turning pro, he doesn’t have many miles under his belt, despite being older than some of the fighters on this list.

Wardley is an unconventional and explosive fighter who has made significant progress since joining Ben Davison and gained experience in fights with David Adeleye and Frazer Clarke.

The latter, however, was a bloody war that ended in a split draw. It was the kind of fight that could change a person, so it was Wardley’s responsibility to win the rematch and move on to bigger and better things.

PROBLEM

Jai Opetaia

Age: 29

Record: (25-0, 19 KOs)

Given Oleksandr Usyk’s rise to the undisputed heavyweight title, it would be remiss not to include cruiserweight Jai Opetai on this list. The Australian is almost identical in size to his Ukrainian counterpart and boxs in such a similar style that Tyson Fury called him in for a sparring session before his final camp.

Usyk has shown that this style, especially from a left-handed fighter, can be kryptonite for the biggest names in his weight class, and Opetaia looks set to make a splash in the heavyweight division if that’s where he decides to try his hand.

Usyk was almost 33 when he made his heavyweight debut, so at 29, Opetaia has plenty of time on his side. More importantly, he has the kind of tenacity required to try his hand at a higher weight class and the talent to stay at the top once he gets there.

Commonwealth champion Nicola Hopewell is back on track

IT WAS just before Christmas 2021. Dennis Hobson’s fight night in Sheffield. Evening at Forge Ponds. Nicola Hopewell was hunting for pastures novel. Hopewell was finding her way now that her venerable boxing world was finally left behind. A long overdue and much needed transition to a more accepted side of the sport. At the time, Hopewell had no manager. She had no promoter. Hopewell actively pursued both.

Covid restrictions were still in place in the country. Masks were to be worn indoors during public events. The then government again issued an order to cover the mouth and nose again. Truth be told, few people cared about this night. We later learned that those who made all these endless and ever-changing rules didn’t care much either.

Hobson struggled with a lot this week. The fighting stopped. Card ruined by endless tardy cancellations. But somehow the show was saved. From what I remember, it was a four-fight card. Local flyweight Tommy Frank won a decision over Charles Tondo. By the way, Frank, a die-hard Sheffield United fan, has a story.

Hobson was set on Frank at the time. Before Covid, he was on a roll. When boxing returned, he was one of the first victims. Two unexpected defeats stopped his momentum. In the fight before Tondo, Frank won the British title. Hobson kept the faith and supported his man. He has a habit of doing just that.

Hopewell was there for that show. She was looking for guidance as her professional career was about to begin. The Worksop player met Hobson after the performance. Terms were offered. Hobson wanted to sign a contract with Hopewell. He liked what he saw and thought he could do something with her.

Hopewell, however, went elsewhere. Although ironically that professional debut eight months later was on Hobson at Bramall Lane. Like Tommy Frank, Hopewell spends his time supporting the red and white people of the city. She called it a dream debut. In many ways it was. Hopewell won by stoppage in the final round. The reluctant opposition barely struck a blow. Hopewell landed virtually everything she threw. Now she was on her feet.

Hopewell has six fights under his belt. In 2023, she lost her undefeated record in a Commonwealth title fight against super flyweight Emma Dolan. A fight from which many lessons were learned. Moving up to flyweight gave Hopewell a second chance to win Commonwealth gold earlier this year.

A tough but deserved victory over Gemma Ruegg in April gave Hopewell her first professional title. However, like many others, Hopewell has been inactive recently. She hasn’t fought since her victory over Ruegg. A possible double title clash with European champion Chloe Watson was lost when the fight seemed obvious. A lost opportunity worth returning to.

Nicola Hopewell needed something or someone to take her to the next stage. Wandering around various promotions is a fight without a plan. No direction. Hopewell needed both. It had to be treated as a priority.

Hobson never lost interest in Hopewell. Virtually every time I saw him in concert, Hopewell was mentioned in conversation. You had a feeling that at some point they would end their cooperation. And they have.

Hopewell returns to Skate Central in Sheffield this Saturday live on Fightzone. The first defense of the Commonwealth title against the uncompromising Nigerian Mary Aina Abbey. A fight that will finally get Hopewell and Hobson on the same page. The experienced promoter is delighted with the novel acquisition.

“Nicola should have signed me from the beginning, but she did,” Hobson told Boxing News. “I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t have to work with anyone I don’t want to. I think she’s a lovely girl and I’ve always thought so. We can do much more with it.

“Nicola can move up and down in several weight classes, depending on the opportunities that lie ahead of her. Without blowing my own horn, I’m as good as anyone at manipulating people. Nicola has such a good attitude. She will fight anyone. But sometimes they need to be protected from themselves. It’s about taking the right fights at the right time.

“But it’s nice that he has such a positive attitude. She’s not a diva. Nicola has such a wonderful personality and I want to aid her succeed and I want her to succeed. I want to collect some titles with her.”

Hopewell is also excited about what lies ahead. At the age of 33, he is entering the most vital stage of his career. The athlete was clearly relieved to have some much-needed structure in her career.

“I’m really content to sign Dennis and have the opportunity to be lively over the next few months,” says Hopewell about signing Hobson. “I met with Dennis and we discussed the possibilities, which I’m excited about.”

Abbey won’t be an basic first defense for Hopewell. But when one of our reporters omitted the six-round and four-round scores at a small-venue show last week (and couldn’t be reached by deadline), I added the scores of 60-54 and 40-36 to the report without a shudder doubts. It seems that so many diminutive shows in diminutive venues, especially north of Watford, host matchmaking so risky, so insipid, so cynical, that even the choreographed WWE seems like an legitimate sport by comparison.

RECENTLY, over 100 former members of the South Norwood & Victory Amateur Boxing Club gathered in Croydon for a special reunion to honor the club’s founder and long-time coach, Terry Smith.

Now 85 years senior, Terry has devoted nearly six decades of his life to mentoring youthful boxers and helping them develop both in the ring and as individuals. The meeting was a heartfelt event, with participants coming from all over the UK and messages of support pouring in from all over the world, with everyone expressing their gratitude for the impact Terry had on their lives.

Terry founded South Norwood & Victory ABC in 1979 with the vision of not only training boxers, but also providing a safe and sound space where youthful boys and men could develop crucial life values ​​such as discipline, respect and perseverance. Over the years, he has become a mentor and role model for countless people, shaping their futures that reach far beyond the sport of boxing.

Through South Norwood & Victory, Terry and his co-coaches have produced numerous champions in both amateur divisions, many of whom have gone on to achieve great success at the professional level.

Among the participants of the reunion was Joshua Buatsi, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and one of the club’s most famed graduates.
