Vergil Ortiz Jr. came within a whisker of a world title shot at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, but was forced to retire twice before earning a majority decision victory to capture the WBC interim super welterweight title against Serhiy Bohachuk.

Ortiz Jr (22-0, 21 KOs) came into the fight with a perfect record against Bohachuk. He had not heard a single final bell in 21 previous fights. He last stepped into the ring in April and needed less than one round to defeat Thomas Dulorme.

California native Bohachuk (24-2, 23 KOs) has also emerged as a renowned puncher, having won six straight fights since being stopped in eight by Brandon Adams in March 2021. The Ukrainian went the distance for the first time in his last outing in March, winning the WBC interim belt with a clear points victory over Brian Mendoza.

Ortiz was hit with a right hook in the first round, sending him to the mat, and after it was ruled a slip, it was later ruled a knockdown on review. Ortiz then began to find his rhythm, applying a lot of pressure and using a lot of punches to win the early rounds.

Bohachuk stepped up to the plate though and matched Ortiz in terms of pressure with his own high-pressure style, leading to a number of exchanges. The eighth round brought another moment of drama when Bohachuk’s left hook sent Ortiz’s glove to the canvas and he was counted out.

This seemed to awaken the beast though as Ortiz fought demanding to dominate the rest of the round. As the fight grew increasingly close, Ortiz staggered the Ukrainian in the penultimate round with a powerful left hook, but when the final bell sounded it looked like Bohachuk had done enough to claim victory.

This was not reflected in the scorecards, as the two scores for Ortiz were 114-112. he won him the fight against a card dealt at 113-113.

Fundora outclasses Asenjo

In the pre-fight fight, Gabriela Fundora (14-0, 6 KO) defended her IBF flyweight title by winning all ten rounds against Daniela Asenjo (16-3-3, 2 KO).

Conwell flattens Gray
The supporting fight featured promising super welterweight contender Charles Conwell (20-0, 15 KO), who defeated Khiary Gray (18-7, 13 KO) with a powerful body blow in the second round of a scheduled ten-round fight.

The long-awaited, undisputed clash between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol ended in a controversial way on Saturday evening. Beterbiev won by majority decision, with the judges scoring him 114-114, 115-113, 116-112.

Bivol likely dominated the first third of the fight, and Beterbiev finished stronger despite never going that distance in his professional career.

In an interview immediately after the fight, Dimitry Bivol’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, he told our reporter “I couldn’t find anyone who would score for Beterbiev. Then you hear 116-112. How can you give Dmitry Bivol 4 rounds in this fight? This is no disrespect to Artur Beterbiev. (Turki Said) bad decision, we will do a rematch.”

There was plenty of reaction on social media after a historic night on the boxing calendar.

Jake Paul sends Mike Tyson a six-word message giving five alternates for the name of the fight

Published

on

Jake Paul has issued a blunt six-word warning amid continued doubts over whether his fight with Mike Tyson will go ahead. The boxing icon and social media sensation will go head-to-head at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Nov. 15, after the original July date was postponed after Tyson, 58, suffered health problems.

Given Tyson’s age and questionable health, there are fears the fight could be shelved again. Paul, who is 31 years Tyson’s junior, insists his opponent is in good shape, declaring: “It’s Mike Tyson or nothing.”

He added: “But most of all, he’s robust, he feels great and he’s doing great in camp.” However, you cannot decide to replace an opponent if Tyson withdraws again if it makes financial sense. Here are five potential opponents of the Problem Child…

Tony Bellew

The outspoken 41-year-old slammed Paul for continuing to fight Tyson, but says he would be willing to enter the fight if the money was right.

The former cruiserweight world champion said last month: “To be completely candid, I have no real hunger or desire to face Jake Paul. Do I want to? No, on purpose. But would I do it? Yes. Everyone has their price. Yes, definitely, but do I really want it?

Chael Sonnen

Former UFC star Sonnen slammed Tyson and Paul this year, accusing Tyson of “faking” training videos. He offered to replace Iron Mike before the original deadline dropped and ridiculed Paul for not putting him in as a replacement.

Sonnen (47) sarcastically wrote on X in May: “I think Jake Paul was clever to sign me to a contract as Tyson’s backup, right?” He then brutally growled, “If Jake Paul finds out he’s fighting ME in a month, HE’S probably going to have a heart attack.”

Sakio Bika

Former super middleweight world champion Bika also intervened after Tyson suffered a medical emergency in May. The Cameroon-born Australian hasn’t fought since 2021, but he’s ready to step into the ring with Paul.

The 45-year-old said: “If Jake Paul is grave about fighting a former champion, look for someone much younger or busy over the last decade. I can fight Jake Paul at any weight he wants.”

Roy Jones Jr

Fighting Jones would probably make sense if Paul still wanted to fight the boxing legend. Jones, 55, fought Tyson in an exhibition fight in 2020 and met Paul, who was fighting under the same bill. This performance spawned the Tyson vs. Paul.

Mike Perry

When the July date was canceled, bare-knuckle boxer Mike Perry stepped in and organized a crossover boxing match taking place in Tampa, Florida. The Problem Child secured a sixth-round knockout after repeatedly throwing the former UFC star.

He was kicked out of the BKFC promotion bare-knuckled by his co-owner Conor McGregor in the wake of this fight, Perry would likely be available for a rematch, although it would have little drawing power.

Neymar responds to being told ‘Arsenal need you’ during the crazy Wardley vs Clarke fight.

Published

Neymar has suggested he would consider a move to Arsenal after being urged to join the Gunners for a boxing match.

The 32-year-old, who is currently working in Saudi Arabia, was present at Saturday’s fight between Fabio Wardley and Frazer Clarke at the Kingdom Arena in Riyad.

In the VIP section, he sat next to boxing promoter Frank Warren, who was born in the London borough of Islington and is a die-hard Arsenal fan.

In a hilarious tiny video clip, the 72-year-old Queensberry Promotions supremo made it clear he wanted Neymar to sign for Mikel Arteta’s side, telling the striker he was needed by the north London club.

“This is the man! He’s coming to England to play for Arsenal! Warren said, making Neymar laugh.

The world football star nodded and replied: “Yes!”, while Warren continued to press him, asking: “When will you come to Arsenal? We need you!”

Still giggling, Neymar replied: “Do you need me? I’m back, I’m back, I’m back!” before giving Warren a massive hug.

While Neymar’s comments are open to interpretation, it seemed that a move to England would be attractive before his career came to an end.

The Brazilian star signed with Saudi Arabian champions Al-Hilal after joining the Pro League team in 2023 in a £75.3 million (€90 million) deal from PSG.

However, his spell in the Gulf region was marred by a grave knee injury, which saw the former Barcelona superstar make just five appearances and one goal, despite earning a whopping £130 million a year.

The closest Neymar came to moving to the UK was when he was a teenager at Santos in 2010. The 18-year-old wonderkid almost joined Chelsea for £25m after the two clubs agreed a transfer fee, before he made a overdue U-turn after an intervention by Brazilian great Pele.

Three years later, he joined Barcelona for £90 million, where he rose to fame playing alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

However, after becoming frustrated with life in Spain, he signed for PSG in 2017 for a world record fee of £186 million (€222 million), becoming the most high-priced player in history.

He came to Paris with ambitions to win the Ballon d’Or, but it turned out that he was competing with Kylian Mbappe for the crown of Parisian prince.

Despite their best efforts, PSG failed to win the Champions League and Neymar left with a bitter taste in his mouth after falling out with the French club’s hierarchy.

While Arsenal would undoubtedly welcome a player of his ability and pedigree, Arteta already has Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Raheem Sterling available. However, if they are interested in making a deal, Neymar may be open to the idea.
